The next Big Barrier (8's)

The next Big Barrier (8's) - 12/08/12 08:55 PM

Well guys had a good year with the old Dodge. Finished 5th in points at the local track, also had my first win in Super Pro! Running dragsters with a door car on 10in. tires is a real uphill battle! But, it sure feels good when you trailer one of them!! Also had my new best's, 9.08 at 147mph and 1.25 @ 60ft. The car ran flawlessly, no issues, no broken parts. Now the long winter break and no racing.. only my little mind running wild. All of you true gear heads know what my problem is. I am just too dam close to the 8's. The next Big Barrier!! I have already picked Dwayne P's brain and am changing the cam. I am also considering switching my 750's for a pair of pro-systems dominators. Anybody out there had any experiances with this kind of change? Will it be worth anything? I know it's alot of money, but, I don't think that cam alone will get me that 8 that I am looking for.

100 lbs. off the car might help without a cam change.

I think you might have the fastest 440-1 car at your weight in the country.Bar none.It is badazz to the bone my man.

Good luck with it!!!

Sad part is when you run your 8.99, you will still want more...

I am lucky that I ran my 8.48 , got my warning to slow it down, and am going to set it up to run 8.55's or so and stop the insanity of going faster. (For now )

I am also running 440-1 heads and 10.5W slicks, so I am sure you will get your 8 no problem.

What DA do you race at normally??

Cheers,

Arnie

Cabin, I don't know the DA as my old weather station doesn't give DA However, Napierville Que, is only at 100' above sea level. The track runs West to East and on those early Spring or late Fall days with high barometric pressures, clear, cold days we sometimes have air density ratios of over 100%. It doesn't happen often but when it does, Magic! P.S. a big tail wind doen't hurt either!!!

Don't eat any holiday food or drink any beer for the next 4 months (sorry 5 months you live next to the edge of the north pole) and take 100 pounds off the car. Thats a real nice car BTW.

When you say switching from 750s to a pair of 1050 Dominators are you saying you are running a tunnel ram with two 750 CFM carbs switching to the two 1050 CFM carbs? If so expect around 30 to 40 HP increase with both set of carbs max out on the fuel delivery and mixtures If switching from a single 750 to twin 1050 a little more HP and torque than above, 55 to 70 HP maybe I saw 30 HP going from a single 1050 Dominator on a cast single 4500 intake to two 1050 Dominators on a tunnel ram for 4500 carbs

Congrats on some great performance! Getting into the 8s is going to be a challenge for sure. It is going to take a solid 35 hp to get there, which is going to be tough to come by at the power level you have already. Care to share what cam you are running now?

Re: The next Big Barrier (8's) - 12/09/12 04:23 PM

Cab, I am currently running two 750's mounted on an Indy tunnel ram . The carbs are just a pair of classics with the air horns milled off, power valve plugged and jetted square but, they worked great! Greg, the cam that I am using now has been in several of my motors and I have run it for years. It was in a B1/BS headed 446, B1/BS headed 528, 440-1's on a 528 and now 440-1's on 572. It is a square cam. 780 lift, 282@ 50 on 110 centerline. Dwayne Porter spec'ed me a new Comp Cam duel pattern cam on a 112 centerline. 800 lift and 292@ 50 on the exhaust and 820 lift and 283@ 50 on the intake. When we dynoed the motor this spring the efficiency went south pretty quick after 6700rpm's. We also wanted soften the bottom up a little bit in an effort to aid traction. You know, running a 10 in. tire on a heavy car with 800 ft lbs of torque, we need all the help we can get. What do you think? Do we have a shot at it?

Re: The next Big Barrier (8's) - 12/10/12 05:31 AM

The new cam is very close to what I have, just a bit more lift. Mine is a Comp 283/296/112 in at 110, with .775 lift (1.55 rockers) intake, .680 exhaust. seem to work pretty good, but not much better than the Isky RR735 I started with!

Most of that power was the manifold change.

This is the best way to go quicker.

Re: The next Big Barrier (8's) - 12/11/12 02:08 AM

I know the least expensive way to improve performance is through weight reduction. That's the biggest reason that I went with the aluminum block and lift off hood. I have tried to keep the car so it still appears to be streetable. Full interior, carpeting, headliner ,rear seat. Last winter I finally removed the passenger seat to offset the additional weight of the additional bars for the rollcage. I also went to 4 wheel disk brakes for additional weight savings. The Charger was over 4000lbs when I started this maddness! Check out the interior shot.

Jim I think your car is truly impressive

Is that an MSD 6 box on the pass side?

Thanks for the info on the other stuff.

Re: The next Big Barrier (8's) - 12/17/12 01:04 AM

Yes Rob, It is a programable digital MSD 6AL. This year I went to crank triggered ignition and had to lock out the distributor. The programable box gave me the ability to put some retard in the timing sequence to aid in starting.

Ya, poor mans AC. Nothing like a triple black car in the summer heat. Not to mention the double lined fire suit and all the rest of equipment! Oh well, I could always put together an iron head 440 together and go back to running high 12's, nah!

Hi Sean! Sorry that I took so long to respond but, I didn't catch the repost. Haven't changed my combo since Norwalk 13'. However, changed the head gaskets over to multi-layed steel and had the heads touched up and installed new valve springs. Car was working good, running a new best of 148 MPH in the summer heat. Was hoping for a new ET best when the Fall air came around but, broke the timing chain the end of July. Bent up a few valves and pushrods. I dropped the pan and tore apart the oiling system and hoping to retrieve missing pieces of timing chain. However, we came up short on pieces. The result was the motor had to come apart. At that point in the year I just had too much going on. I have the motor back now so, it will turn into a winter project. Did you make it to Norwalk this year? I am shooting for Norwalk next year

I had an idea for success to get into the eights, solidly. Pick Dwayne's brain and what to change, and the order to test. Gather a couple days worth of cash and off to the dyno. Add in some weight loss from the weight loss thread, and with luck you will solidly be in the eights
What do you think?
