408 stroker build - which windage tray?

408 stroker build - which windage tray? - 12/05/12 01:55 AM

Is there a windage tray that will work out of the box with my 360 (5.9) Magnum block and a 4" stroke (Eagle crank)? If not, what are guys using? Thanks in advance.

I think I used a moroso 360 tray and bent it till the thing fit right not the best but it works

Crank scraper, preferably with a 7-8 qt. pan but running less than that. Scraper may need "fitting".

Do you guys use a different pickup tube in deep sump applications? I have a Milodon street, low profile 7 qt pan so it's not MUCH deeper than stock.

I read up on the benefits of a scraper and I already have decided to at least use a windage tray. This car gets essentially no track time but I misbehave quite frequently on the street. I typically run it up to 5800-6k every time I drive it, so oil is pretty sloshy on every outing.

Stay away from a tray on a little block. Robs power.

I tend to agree I've never seen any ET improvements with a tray or scraper on a small block, but I would think a mesh screen type tray could help some to catch some of the 'roping, I run a rear sump truck pan on mine though.

8 quart pan w/6 qts of oil... seems to work fine with big fat alu rods

Kevco pan with built in scraper and no tray.
It's a good pan for the street since it does not sacrifice much ground clearance. Holds a couple more quarts than stock and has extensive baffling. Relatively cheap too.
I think the general consensus over the last few years is that windage trays are overrated.

I'm using one on my 360. I think it set me back $230 and will be used on the 408 build (whenever I get around to that). 7qt, baffled, and doesn't sit any lower and than a factory pan.

Have a picture of your pan? I run a kevko as well. and when I pulled it out of the box the sorry excuse for a crank scraper had me laughing out loud...Wondering if mine looks any different from yours? thanks

The further you get the oil sump away from the crank the better, baffle it so you have oil control on acceleration and decel, and let it eat.

Anyone have a pic of a properly baffled pan? My Milidon had some baffles, but they seem to be minimal.

The Moroso pans are a good example......

I run no tray in my 408, 8 qt pan(5qts in it)......

In my 360 I will be running the same pan, but scraper and a modifided stock windage tray. I took a stock tray windowed it and welded in screens....

Why would you run no oil control besides baffling on the 408 but do it on the 360? Just curious.

Re: 408 stroker build - which windage tray? - 12/06/12 10:08 PM

Here's a pic of my Milodon. The pickup resides just fractions of an inch away from the bottom when installed. It seems to me that the motor will never starve for oil when subjected to any g forces, but I am still pondering foaming and oil adding to the rotating mass. The Morose pan seems to be constructed similarly, though I see they incorporate a provision for the dipstick (duh, Milodon!). The Moroso also seems to extend the baffling further inward, but not by much. I'd add that the Milodon pan is superior on the sides where the body of the pan extends further than the opening, creating some lateral baffling where the Moroso doesn't seem to have that feature.

I am open to anyone's input on this pan (I'd consider welding in more baffling if necessary), but I will say that I am not considering replacing the pan for another as I like this ones low profile and appearance and it fits great in my e body.... Though I found out it requires removal of both TTI headers to drop the pan (bummer!!!)

Note: I notched one baffle to allow room for my dip stick.

Decided to go with a crank scraper with these guys after studying their site & talking with the guy. We agreed a windage tray was unnecessary/ potentially counter productive in my case.
