Like the title says..When do you need a Pro gear ring and pinion set? Discuss!

when you make power/torque that can shatter teeth on ring/pinion...

thats why I am using a pro-gear and a spool on the street in my 9" that will be installed in my 63 Dodge...with about 700hp and over 650lbs ft of torque, I would be breaking street gears and eating differentials..

hypothetically speaking of course....

What Mr. P-Body said.
It has more to do with impact than Torque/HP. A heavy stick car, or leaf spring car that bucks around, hook-spin-hook, those are the situations that are more likely to break a street gear.
My 70 Challenger has a back braced 8 3/4, and in 1100 passes, I've broke one ring gear, and that was on a marginal track with a heavy dose of Nitrous.

At 2850 lbs. and 600 HP, a street gear in my 8-3/4 would last 100 runs, then inspection would show a number of chipped ring gear teeth. Pro gear has been in it since 1996.

I'm still using street gears, but I use the Red-Line Shock-Proof gear oil.

With a 9, you should be breaking parts at that low of power! Jana 76 all the way! 10.5" ring gear in a 60 housing.

are you trying to say that I shouldn't be breaking gears at my power setting??....


I have Dana 60 in my Camaro with street gears and a differential...its a 4spd and I have launched at 6700 rpm without a whimper...thats why I changed out the 12 bolt that was in it...

I bought the 9" from a guy that was getting out of racing...all new stuff...the gears are A/FX pro gears and are setup to allow gear oil to climb more effectively over the rear of the ring gear...in order to cool it better on the street....I have talked to many guys that set up gears and had asked if a diff and street gears would be a better way to go given my setup....they all agreed ...Pro-Gears and a spool....

My car made 1300 hp and 1000 ft lbs of torque

Street Gear was fine

Jason Ruckert of VP made WAY more power than me and he ran a street gear with no problems

Ted... my car is 3350#, runs high 9's and using a trans brake. I can get about a year out of a set of street gears (Dana 60) before the pinion teeth start to fail. If I foot brake, I can nearly tripple that. For me, a pro set of gears are the way to go. When the rearend wine get noticeably louder, it's telling me to change them out. For me, its easier and quicker to change out gears before they fail completely then to tear down the trans and inspect the sprag. It's your choice, just offering up some personal experience. Thank you! If I do everything to this junker,it is quite possible that it may hit the high 9.xx mark. Only time and cash flow will determine that.

Weight kills.... even if you go with the pro gear
it will only last so long, they're softer to take
the shock but they start to roll the teeth after time

TBOOMER- Your car is no light weight...

Your new heads have received some "Radar Love"

Its gonna make a lot more power......

Things can get ugly with a drivetrain failure and a torqueflite....(Dont ask me how I know)

I think I could sleep better at night with a Pro Gear in that thing......

Yupp...He did mine the same as Jim Van Zees..I talked to Jim and have a little more cam,cubic inches and compression than his Challenger. His does 6.17 in the 1/8th..

Ted just remember to WEED out suggestions from cars that sit in the garage 95% of the time or those from guys that do lots of change-outs. The small difference in price and the fact that you will want them to last forever should lead your direction.

I have been running OEM 3.89 gears for hundreds of passes .

Same here.. Street Gear.. 3000# Barracuda.. leaving @ 5800-6200 with a P/G and a brake.. 9.40's to 8.70's (1.23-1.30 60') always a street gear 9" Ford.. No breakage ever. Broke low gear sets before though..

As a matter of fact, the only gear that ever went bad in any of my cars was a pro gear..

Thanks so much,fellas! I had a pretty bad day...But it is getting better! For as many passes as I put on this thing,maybe the standards will work ok...
