650-700hp Mopar 440cid motor build - 11/17/12 04:10 PM

Hey guys

Need you opinion about parts ( heads, camshaft etc. ) what to use for streetable pump gas ( max. CR around 10-10.5 ) `72 year 440cid motor.
Parts what we have allready is Edelbrock Performer intake and 750cfm Speed Demon mechanical carburator
What camshaft you suggest to use and do Edelbrock RPM heads are fine for that kind of power cause I really dont think OEM heads are capable for our plans

Thanks
Georg

You will not make 650 to 700 hp with any of the parts you have. You will need somewhere around a 500 inch motor with indy or victor heads with a large solid/or solid roller cam and 1050+ cfm carb to get there from what I have seen to run on pump gas at that hp level.

Need boost or better heads/cam/carb. S/F....Ken M

Not going to get close with those parts. With a bigger carb and 10psi of boost you could get there.

I believe that 650 hp is achievable with a pump gas 440, but like others have stated, not with the parts you have. Fully ported RPM would possibly work IMO, but I have not done it myself. I believe that others have found that they can support that power level with full on RPMs in other applications.

A 300 shot of n2o should put you there.

650-700hp from a carbureted 440? You might want to start with the block/crank issue at that horsepower level. Better to be safe than - - (SORRY!!). Otherwise, BIG CFM CARB(S)/good intake, large-ported heads/compression, the RIGHT cam/valvetrain setup, good exhaust setup and good tuning skills will get you there. Chances of a near stock parts 440 setup making that level of power (save for a well-built TURBO combo) is nil!

George, my first pump gas stroker motor made 612 HP at 5600 RPM and 644 Ft. lbs at 4500 RPM, it was a 400 block bored to 4.375, I bought a Ohio 4.25 stroke crank for it and used a set of CAT brand 6.800 long H beam forged steel rods and s set of custom Ross 22 CC dished pistons that made a measured 9.25 to 1 compressio ratio. I use a set of big valve ported 906 heads that didn't flow very well and a Eddy low deck six pak intake and stock type vacume carbs. The cam is a custom grind Comp Cams solid roller that is 260 degrees at .050 I switched heads later to a set of Eddy RPM that I had MCH CNC port and that picked the car up .3 ET and 4 MPH in the 1/4 mile, that was proablly worth 40 to 60 HP You can make a big motor make big power easier than you can with a smaller C.I. motor BTW, you'll need a bigger carb also, big motors, high HP motors, need lots of air to make that power

I agree that none of the parts will make it. The block is usually good for 600HP for a start. A stroker crank will make things easier, A performer intake will not do it, 750CFM is not a big enough carb and Performer heads are not the right choice if you are going after that much HP.
Your stock block and forged crank could be the basis for a decent 500HP build with Performer heads and a better intake than the stock based Performer.

Ported -1 heads, 4.15 or 4.25 crank, 10.7:1, Indy intake, roller cam around 260's @ .050, true 950 carb, 2" headers should make it easy.

Yep, my thoughts too. In fact, you could probably do it with a 275 flat tappet.

600 hp with a slightly worked set of RPM heads, maybe 650 with a nicely ported set is not real hard to do.
For comparison, the engine I had on my dyno today,
505 inch ( 4.350x4.250) Victor heads with minor work,Victor intake, shelf grind Comp roller cam,1050 Dominator custom built 2.125x4" headers made 671 tq/690 hp before major tuning. 715 tq/735 hp after all day tweaking and putting my modified Dominator on.

To make that much power, the RPM heads need so much work that there is no sence in going that route. You have basically two choices; build an engine with the parts you have and it will make x-horsepower, or shoot for the 650-700 hp range and make the parts choices accordingly. Here is what I would propbly do to keep the budget reasonable. If willing to retain the stock crank I would pick Mahle pistons and rigns for it and bore the block for them. Rods, from 440 source or equivalent. Enlargen the oil galleys of the block and use a 1/2" pickup, main studs and linehone the block. I might also do a short fill for the block, which should be done before machining. Last thing would be trial assembly, measurement and cut the decks to achieve zero deck height. For heads I would choose Pro Comp aluminum heads and port them. I might use other rockers depending of the budget, Harlan sharp or even the Indy rockers may be better than what pro comp offers. Indy rockers have greater offset and the heads require some grinding to fit them. For the intake I would use Edelbrock Victor with a 2" dominator adapter and a 1050 dominator carb. You should end up with around 11:1 CR which should work fine with 98E gas you have, no problem there. I would use an old tried and true cam motion roller available from Indy, 276/283 at .050" and .69"/.63" lift. Then get the lifters etc where you can get a good deal and last order the pushrods after you know the lengths required. 2" headers, a good ignition and I'm pretty sure you should be in the range you desired, or if eveything goes like in the movies, perhaps even a little beyond.

I make in that range with a stock crank 451/400 using Stage VI heads (300 flow), a mopar 590 cam, Indy 440-3 intake and a quick fuel 1050 dominator, however I am at 13:1. It seems like you have to trade cubic inches for compression.
