msd ignition and nitrous

msd ignition and nitrous - 11/05/12 10:31 PM

Soooo I'm planning to venture over to the dark side and use nitrous on my Coronet. As I have been reading, I'll have to adjust the timing when using it. MSD has a couple products to use when using nitrous. I have purchased the powershot system and have been looking at these MSD items to adjust the timing when I'd use it: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/msd-8680 and http://www.summitracing.com/parts/msd-8982 Which one would you suggest/use? This is a street car, nitrous would only be used at the track.

Thanks, Dave

8680 will retard all the time. Not bad for low levels of nitrous but you could just turn the distributer and do the same. Not the best way to do it.

8982 is by far the better way as your engine will make it's normal steam and then retard timing upon nitrous activation.

Just go to a digtal 6 plus, it has all you need in one box.

Start retard
2 step
rev limiter
up to a 9 degree retard for nos without the use of modules.

I like this option too.
I have an 8982 new in box because I liked what I saw with the 6AL2 programmable and went that direction.
Cheaper than the digital 6 plus and has all the features.
The downside is you will need to buy a cable to connect it to your computer to program it and they don't tell you this until you find out the hard way.
Mancini has about the best prices on them that I have seen recently..........cheaper than I paid by a little bit , but I bought before their catalog hit my mailbox.
The all in one makes for a cleaner install , and once you buy all the boxes and gizmos , chips and other do-dads , you will have far more wrapped up in your ignition that if you just bought something like this.

Thank you everyone for the replies. I greatly appreciate it. Anyone else have any input? Perhaps a different "set up" out there? I am currently running the msd 6al. Thanks.

Just depends on how fast you want to go.
7531 box
the new msd grid
both of these data log to but the price also reflects this.We used a 6520 last year none programble but easy to use.We ran up to a 350 shot with that box and had no promblem.

I use the 6AL box for my ignition and then have the dial controlled timing device from MSD. I set it up to where I can pull 15* out. Works fine and I also use it for starting and rolling along at highway speed. When spraying big amounts with a lot of timing out you can still do the burnout with all the timing in then pull it before staging. I also have used it to pull 1-2* up top which has resulted in better mph.

Don't know what else you currently have or use with your 6al, or what you ultimately want out of an ignition system, but this will give you a 2-step limiter, a high end rev limiter, and nitrous retard option all in one box. I'd sell the 6AL and get one of these, before I'd start adding components to the existing setup..... but that's me.

I use an MSD Power Grid with my old 6AL. It works awesome and has a ton of flexibility if (OK when) you start upping the nitrous and need to ramp timing etc.... By the time you add up the price of a retard module and either buy the chips or an adjustable dial or two, you're better than half way to the price of a Grid.
Downside could be that you need to setup and adjust everything from a laptop. Very convenient if you're at the track and have it with you, not so convenient if you don't have a laptop with you. Like others have said, it really depends on what's important to you and what you think might be important down the road.
Another downside is if you don't use a transbrake since the timing/launch retards are triggered off the release of the brake. Not sure if there's a way around that?
