Head studs and header flanges - 10/19/12 02:54 PM

I was helping a friend put on some headers.. And just then.. I noticed that the studs was in the way. ( Just under the tubes ). Myself.. I've never run studs before.. So I've never had this issue. My question is.. What have you guys done to eliminate this issue. Cut the stud or replaced with bolt. Again.. Thanks for your help

Do you mean the car has the factory studs still in the heads?
I run studs for the exhaust wherever possible; get the style with an allen head, but don't bottom them out in the holes, and use anti-sieze or sealant in the proper places. I also cut the flanges & gaskets so they're individual.

Do you mean header studs? If so, you can replace em w/bolts but if they`re stock heads then you need sealer as they go into water..............

My guess is you are talking about the lower row of head studs under the header flange. It will often interfere with the flanges at least on the outside corners of the headers, or maybe all across the bottom.

You have a couple choices:

1) Get the correct length ( shorter) studs from ARP

2) Remove existing studs and cut the tops down. ( usually helps to radius the top of the stud as well in a cicular type pattern)

3) Also get 12 point nuts which will sometimes help with a little extra clearance.

Good luck.

IS this a big block or small block??

Stock or aftermarket head???

On stock heads

small block you only need the studs on the end

big block IF you can studs on every hole

Sorry.. I was in a hurry. it a 440 ..and it has the 906 heads.. And used ARP studs. I should have explained it better. I forgot they used to put studs in for exhaust manifolds and head too. the studs are sticking out past the nuts about 1/4 inch. If I cut the stud off.. I will be able to get the flange against the head. But when I go to use the gasket.. And then The nuts are going to be to tall. Thanks again for your help.

i used a thinner washer & notched the flange a little for more clearance. worked great.

I had to clearance the flange on my headers to fit the head studs.
