Paul Page was terrible. I'd like to see Gary Scelzi in there. (How in the heck do you spell his last name anyway..LOL)

Dave Rieff would be my pick.

I don't know how great it is....I'm never real thrilled with someone losing thier job.

That being said, Paul wasn't the best. But, if NHRA think that him not being there is going to solve their TV audience; attendance problem, I think they are mistaken.

Paul has been around a long time, I feel bad for him, even if I didn't really care for his performance. It didn't stop me from watching it.

Having watched drag racing through the Steve Evans / Dave McClelland era.... it will never be as good. I actually thought Bazemore did a pretty respectable job. Another that might be interesting is Dean Skuza... that is if anyone remembers who he is/was.

I happened to stop in Pomona for the race and it was opening weekend of the nhra museum [97'].

Steve Evans was interviewing Don Prudome. He was nice enough to talk with me and the wife.

Pretty sure he passed away...

I dont like anyone loosing their job so hopefully he
is retiring but I never cared for his BS and not
knowing simple things

I agree, now maybe Mike Dunn will be more than a also ran in the announcers booth.

I had no issues with Mr Page, I do believe that who ever replaces him will be bad! just no one out there at this present time who could do any better than Page!
for those who think he doesn't know anything, need to look at his family , he supports drag racing and is very much involved in the sport!
Anyone can make mistakes even some of the best did, I think this will be the have a deeper impact than you think, with the drag racing sport losing more and more spectators, and racers alike, would not be surprised to see it go back to the days of old, tape delay and broadcast days after the event,
What you have is live feed now , but back when Steve evans ,and others they had the advantage of tape editing, made them much better announcer jmo

I agree, Diamond P was the most awesome broadcaster of drag racing.

Does anyone remember the year end show Diamond P put togeather a long time ago when Warren Johnson and others won the championship and they used Tom Petty's "running down a dream" song? That video inspired me to work my butt off and build a complete alcohol dragster team from scratch!

I'll never forget it.

Can't really say anything about Paul but Mike Dunn does a really awsome job explianing all the little detail stuff that I find interesting. Would be nice to have another anouncer with that background.

THANK YOU ESPN!!!...although you are about 5 years too late...Paul Page drove me nuts from day one because he didn't know squat about drag racing...so hard to watch the race and listen to him fumble through his lame comments (albeit he got better 5 years into the job...but still not good). Marty Reid and Mike Dunn would be a great combo. I Liked watching when Marty was the commentator.

I don't think making this change will make much of a difference on TV viewing. NHRA has other issues watching the broadcast you see the stands with only a handfull of attendance.

Put in Bob Fry and be done with it.

The Waltrip sisters would be an interesting change.

And if they can't add more air time to NHRA at least start the Shows on time!

I wouldnt mind Gary Scelzi(sp) but he would add some
humor and knowledge and he's not working(that I
know of)

For real color commentary they should put Bob Glidden in there with Dunn.

or big daddy would be good to add to the mix. He and mike dunn could talk old and older times.
the espn show focuses to much on Top fuel and the Force team,
way to much force!

Big Daddy is my all time hero.

However, he may be a tad too opinionated for the NHRA sheriffs....not real politically correct.

They should call it the John Force show... even if
all 4 cars lose they still will manage to interview
one of them... mostly John or Courtney

That's why they need a non fuel guy!!

I hate to see anyone get fired to but I have been wishing for him to get canned for years. I always wondered who he knew, was related to, or what boys club he belonged to. He should have NEVER been given that job in the first place. We were spoiled years ago when Diamond P did the race coverage.
I still watch and enjoy every minute of NHRA drag racing but I am looking forward to see what the 2013 season will bring.

Re: GREAT news from ESPN. See ya, Paul ! ! ! - 08/16/12 11:48 PM

Thank goodness, he was awful ! now if they would just realize that theres more to drag racing than John Force, even if thats pretty much all the NHRA has left, that and a big bar tab.

Re: GREAT news from ESPN. See ya, Paul ! ! ! - 08/17/12 12:48 AM

I'm thinking that next year they will have WJ in the booth during P/S.
I believe the GA/EE spat will replace all the Force interviews.

I talked to Dave at the Mile-High Nationals and commended him for his work with the Lucas Oil Series. Although I liked Marty Reid, I think Dave Rieff has an greater chance of taking over for Paul Page.

Re: GREAT news from ESPN. See ya, Paul ! ! ! - 08/17/12 02:28 AM

Page and Reid are full-time salaried workers for the network. When they are not doing a race, they are doing a hot-dog eating contest or some other drivel. The others are part-time, none of them will be the play caller guy unless they take a full-time job. The article said that Reid would probably get the NHRA job back. When he did NHRA years ago he was panned terribly by the internet message boards. Just goes to show you how good Steve E. was back in the TNN days.

Sczelzy is working. his family owns a truck box company that supplies aftermarket truck beds for 2500 series and up utility trucks. thats one of the reasons he left dragracing according to the interview I saw on espn the year he anounced retirement. it sure would be great to see him in the booth.

I knew the family had a business but I thought he
retired to be with his family... thats all I heard
thanks

Scelzi's truck bed business is going gangbusters, that is the reason he quit racing, I would love to see him back in a car! I always enjoyed Marty and hope he indeed will be back in the booth!

Re: GREAT news from ESPN. See ya, Paul ! ! ! - 08/17/12 09:47 PM

In my opinion, NHRA problem of lack of spectators, was not because of Paul Page, although I felt he did a much better job with the World Of Outlaws and Sprint Car Racing! I believe NHRA only concentrats on JOHN JOHN JOHN JOHN JOHN FORCE FORCE FORCE FORCE RACING RACING. The fans are somewhat tired of TOP FUEL / FUNNY CARS AND JOHN FORCE RACING each and every week. Many times we don't see but the 3rd or 4th round of PRO STOCK QUALIFYING.

We never even get the results from the sportsmens classes and never even mention these dedicated racers, who pay their own way and do not have the high dollar sponsors.

NHRA definately has some serious problems and as a Nostalgia Super Stock Racer, you get so tired of them constantly putting it to you, hopefully IHRA never goes away. HEMI JOE

I don't see this as a "great" thing to happen.Marty Reid isn't really any better than Paul Page.

Don't like to see anyone lose their job.

If Dave Reiff takes over, that would be ideal.John Kernan is good too.
