Who says sleepers can't have hood pins...

Who says sleepers can't have hood pins... - 08/02/12 01:17 AM

So long story short...

The turbo is where the radiator wants to be. Can't change that.

Which means the radiator is where the hood latch wants to be.
Can't change that.

Time for hood pins... but sleepers can't have hood pins can they? Sure they can...

Took a stock hood pin and turned it down for 5/16" thread...

Threaded it into the old bump stop on the hood...

Drill a hole in the core support, along with some sneaky small grill modifications...

I just sold a pretty solid '62 2-dr sedan Savoy. Would have made the perfect max wedge clone. Too many projects though... It did pay for my 6.1 though.

That is SO COOL!!! Nice work!

Re: Who says sleepers can't have hood pins... - 08/02/12 03:28 PM

Thanks guys. Yes it's a '62 Savoy, grandma green, 12,000 mile 4-door survivor... now with a turbo small block.

Just about finished up. The only thing I really have left to do is the roll bar. Should be ready to hit the streets/track soon.

I'm not sure how quick it'll be, depends how good it hooks on the 255/60 drag radials. The only thing I'm sure of is that it has LOTS of power...

I've ridden in it on shakedown. I can tell you at 9 lbs boost , 18 degrees of timing, 3.23 gear it feels as good as my 11.0 street car.

Sneaky! Just dont forget them with a heavy hood like that.. it would smash the whole roof in once it came over.

Re: Who says sleepers can't have hood pins... - 08/04/12 03:08 AM

Very cool Idea I wish I would have thought of that before punching the holes in my hood My intercooler takes up all the space where the latch is supposed to be. I wanted to try to stay as low key as possible but even with the ratty mismatched paint, whitewalls, and hubcaps I run sometimes the 3.5in exhaust, fuel cell and lines/filter give mine away

LOL... I put 4" tubing on that all the way to the
rear bumper... I dont think you can see it easily
from the rear(sure was tight getting it between the
trans and T bar)

Re: Who says sleepers can't have hood pins... - 08/04/12 03:37 PM

It's certainly not dead sleeper if you crawl around under the car and look real hard... but from 1 lane over on the street you'd never have a clue...or a chance...

Yeah the 4" down pipe is so tight through the torsion bar that even with Lava Wrap on it, the trans blanket still got melted... lol

I figured if you used a blanket it might melt...
its only nylon... might need lava there also or a shield
EDIT
By the way your shield is here... it came in

Yeah I thought I had it wrapped pretty good, but didn't work. I re-wrapped it twice as thick this time, so we'll see if it lives.

Just finished bending the rear bars. Just need to get the radiator back in it, and it'll be ready to come over there...

THAT is the sneaky, stealthy, evil, tech-tip of the week. And I mean that with appreciation & respect...
That's a great car.

Re: Who says sleepers can't have hood pins... - 08/05/12 01:12 PM

Thanks guys... it's not a world beater for sure, but it ain't bad...

It's a 360", ported iron 308 castings, very small hydraulic roller, 9.2:1, 75mm turbo, E85...

Don't mind the angled radiator in this pic... this is when I was trying to make everything work for the hood latch. Just about there on everything though... hoping to get the radiator mounted today, get the hoses on it and fire it back up.

Still need to clean everything up again, it's gotten dirty over the winter thrashing on it. Who knew E85 would eat fresh mopar orange off an intake?

I see mad money on some late night street racing if you dare..........

Run it no time at the track on low boost and see if anybody bites, then turn up the boost and get paid.

I love it!

car

Its Scott's car but its a stock bottom end and so
far he has keep the boost down... mainly because it
was blowing through the conv before... I think he
had it at 9 or 10 lbs

Re: Who says sleepers can't have hood pins... - 08/06/12 01:48 AM

So far it's only on the gate spring driving it around on the street the few times I've had it out (so 9psi). I had it up towards 12~13psi on the dyno, but the carb wouldn't fatten up enough so we had a TON of timing out of it at that point (only 16 degree's total).

Bottom end is stock cast crank, stock rods with ARP bolts, Probe off the shelf forged pistons, stainless top rings, and the block is 1/2 filled.

Going right along with the sleeper hood pins... Got the worlds largest K&N filter hidden pretty well too... 5" inlet to the fender.

No, hoping for Norwalk if I'm lucky. Just depends if I can sweet talk Mr. P-body into knocking out the roll bar for me real quick...
