The story of my car w/pics and video - 06/19/12 08:56 AM

Well as some of you know and many others have asked in PM's my lowly street strip Dart has received some upgrades over the winter. The trusty 340, 904 and 8.75 served me well for many seasons. Roughly about 5 years, well over 1000 passes and immeasurable abuse on the streets. At times it served as my daily driver, I won numerous races in the car as well as a track championship. It was truly an amazing street-strip piece, but who can leave well enough alone.

The last time I raced the car down in Vegas over Thanksgiving, Went out on top.

I like everyone else I wanted to go faster! The car in its 12.60 trim was fun and competitive but again, faster is better. The 340 engine was getting long in the tooth anyways and would need replaced, or at least rebuilt. So about a year and a half ago I started preparing, purchasing parts, then selling the same parts to go a different direction, save money etc. My ADD was in full effect and at times it seemed like I would never have something to stick in the car. I spent countless hours weighing my options; small block? big block? gen 3 hemi? Until I finally came to a conclusion, sort of.

Taking it apart

Stroked small block seemed to be the simplest and best package for me. I already had headers, transmission would work, converter would work. So I set out to build a low maintenance small block engine that would run decent, still be drivable and not break the bank. My 340 was already .030 over, I have a complete standard bore 360 sitting on a stand that would make a good donor. But browsing craigslist one day I happened upon a set of rods and pistons for a “stock stroke 318, standard bore”.

They were eagle H beams and Ross pistons rings and bearings for a 396” small block stroker, brand new, never used and cheap. Who would build an entire motor around a set of rods and pistons? The same idiot writing this…. and I didn’t even end up using the pistons. I’m going to make a long story short and break down the rest of the engine combo below as it changed so many times, I can’t even keep track.

318 .030 over for 390”
BPE 4” crank
Eagle H beams
Diamond Flat tops (11.3:1)
Standard tension moly rings
Kevco oil pan
Cometics
Bullet Solid FT 263/268@.050 .656/.662 lift with 1.6’s
Howards EDM lifters
Ported Edelbrock heads 280@.600
Crane 1.6 rockers
Smith brothers push rods
Victor 340 OOTB
750HP Holley
1 5/8-3/4” TTI’s
Full 3” exhaust to the bumper
Tranzact Built 904
Pro tree brake
2.74 first gear
8” PTC converter flashes to ~4800
255/60/15 drag radial (27” tall)
4.10 gear

Inside a Kevco Pan

Knowing I was going to be putting more power to the car I pulled the old rear end out in favor of a slightly narrowed Dana. 4.10’s, spool, 35 spline axles, all the parts sourced from Dr. Diff. Truly a pleasure to do business with, and a very knowledgeable fellow. A 6 point moly rollbar was also installed along with a pair of Kirkey seats and RCI harnesses.

Future driver, my nephew, giving the car a test

The car was previously outfit with a full caltrac system, 4 shocks, bars and mono leafs, so I figured I would be good to go in the traction department, tubs were widened anyways just in case,

Obviously the stock fuel system wouldn’t be up to the task of feeding the new engine so a custom aluminum tank was purchased from www.hotrodcitygarage.com . I didn’t want to fill the trunk up with a fuel cell as I need the space for tools and other items at the track. An Aeromotive A1000 pump and regulator were acquired. I had heard lots of good things about the Earls Pro lite 350 hose so I ordered enough of that for a feed and return line as well as more fittings than I can remember. This hose is amazing to work with. No more pricked fingers trying to handle the stainless line, it cut it with a hose cutter, it’s just super easy to work with, I love it.

In typical fashion the car wasn’t complete and running until the night before the first and only test and tune of the year. That was also the only test and tune of the season before the points racing started. It being a completely new combination there have been many many headaches and hiccups the past 2 months but we seem to be approaching the light at the end of the tunnel.

Pictures of newly coated TTI's

The car only has 38 passes on it so far, and has run a best of 10.78@123.7 with a 1.47 60 foot time. 6600 shift, 6700 through the traps. It’s still a heavy pig, and I’m sure there is more left in it with tuning and playing with parts. I even drove it to work every day last week. For what it is I’m happy with it, hopefully I can do my job behind the wheel and find the winners circle soon.

I’ll conclude this by saying thanks to everyone who answered my questions, offered advice, listened to me whine about things not going according to plan, etc. There are too many people to list and I’m afraid I will forget someone. Big thanks to my brother Andrew (topfueldart), he has helped me do the majority of the work and let me use space in his garage on countless occasions to build the engine and do other tasks along the way.

Wow I did not realize you had it all done and raced it already. I must have missed a post or two. Looks and sounds great. Is it still pump gas ? Do you plan to still drive it on the street cause there is nothing wrong with 10.70 strreet cars. I would say she is running good. Did you hit your et goal you were looking for ? Nice job on it and congrats on 10's. Ron

SWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEET! I was wondering why you commented on a post saying you went 1.49 in the 60'...I was thinking either you're on the bottle, or you changed your setup, because I have never seen a mid 12 second car 60' like that . Nice combo!! Now I'm getting the itch again to pull this little cam out of my stroker....

Look forward to you guys coming down here again for the turkey race. Best of luck with the rest of the season!!

Yep, still runs on 92 octane. Pump gas is the only thing I have ever run the car on this allows me to enjoy the car more. I drove it to work everyday last week, cruise it around when the weather is decent. As for my goals yes I would say it reached them, there are things that need upgraded still to get more power out of it, the carb, bigger header, bigger exhaust etc. But for now I am pleased with the way the car runs. Not many legitimate 10 second street cars running around up here.

Rod,
Thanks for providing the small block world with a great product at an affordable price. My machinist loved the crank, asked me multiple times where I got it so he could recommend them in the future.

Livable, but compared to the baby hydraulic that I'm used to it is a bit of a change. You hear the valvetrain noise, and the car sort of rumbles until about 2500 rpm. Doesn't bother me at all, other drivers on the road get a kick out of it and everyone I've taken for rides in the car enjoys it as well. This cam wasn't really designed with street driving in mind though, I told him pick the cam you would for a racecar, and I'll deal with the street manners.

Thanks Al, I look forward to coming down again as well. I'll take this time as well to thank another moparts member Jess for giving me the opportunity to license in his car this past weekend. Its a great working piece and really makes my car seem slow! 9.02@142 lifting early was a ton of fun and I do appreciate him trusting me with his car.

Options are limited, It will fit on the frame rail or behind the rear bumper, but that was higher than I cared to mount it. So here's where it currently resides.

Why yes you can, looking back I should have done the 408-416 thing, bigger bore = more power, but this shall work just fine for its intended purpose. Its a bracket car, just a number on the window.

Thanks again for the kind words. Raced the car this weekend at our national open up here, Runner upped in real street .4 pro tree, 12.0 index class. And lost in the semi's of pro. I was .018 to his .045 on the tree and the car chattered the tires time to move the leafs in for more rubber!

You're definitely not the first person to tell me this! On a good track the car works great, and will 60' within a few thousandths all day, the bad tracks, not so lucky. That said I'm a bit stubborn still and have a brand new set of these drag radials sitting here to use for now. Once I move the springs in and buy a wider rear wheel I'll have a set of radials and a DOT bias ply to choose from depending on the day.

Thanks for the kind words, I'm glad you all enjoyed the short story. Now I just need to find a /6 grandma car to stick my old drivetrain into!

Justin its been fun over the years watching and reading about your Dart. I like that its a real dual purpose car thats lethal on the track, and I have to say, I really like your attitude and enthusiasm. I am a bit biased though, I LOVE those 67 Darts. The upgrades are very cool and well executed, nicely done buddy. Impressive numbers out of that...ummm....318! Hey, if they dont know, dont tell'em.
Sounds great in the vid. The camera inside is something I always wanted to do when I had my Dart but never did. Best of luck to you with the new combo. I dont say much here anymore, but I'll be watching.

Thats great. I was kinda doing the same with my 63 as I just wanted a car that I could drive to the track and run on 92 pump and run 10's through the pipes which I did as you have. You race alot more then I do as I only race my 63 a couple times a year but thats fine with me as that fits my budget. I love to drive it everywhere. You did a great job as your car looks great and runs very good. Congrats again on such a nice job. Ron

Cam was Spec'd by RyanJ for my combo, at first I thought it seemed pretty big as well, but it seems to work! No complaints at all about it. Looking back, probably should have gone solid roller for more power, but it was my choice to stay flat tappet.

Brian @ IMM ported the heads, good guy to work with as you know.

I'll keep flying the street car banner, it riles a lot of people up when my street car is faster than their gutted, big tire racecar. In the end most are pretty impressed by its performance and what I do with it, some just shake their heads. They're made to be driven, not sit in the garage, this winter was painful for me to not be able to drive it around, even though the weather sucks up here haha.

Thanks Ya'll

Geez guys give it a rest, Dustin spent a lot of time and physical effort to lose a bunch of weight and now all this praise and back slapping-his head is going to be so swollen he'll be at twice his original size. In all seriousness to those who called Dustin a hotrodder, he is a lot more than that--he is a RACER much like some of those who would sleep in their car or truck at the track-no fancy toter or motorhome, then get up in the morning and run a bunch of .00 reaction times thru out the day. By the way, ya did good buddy car looks like means business.

Kirkey Pro street seats, 17" I think

Mounts I don't have any decent pictures of. Basically just built L's one side flat on the seat, one flat on the floor and bolted them together to get the angle how I wanted it.

I'm tall and have a long torso, so thats how we got the seats low enough for me to drive the car with a helmet on and have room to spare.
