Anyone have pictures of SB Jesel belt drive?

Anyone have pictures of SB Jesel belt drive? - 06/12/12 09:32 PM

I haven't seen very many pictures of SB Mopar engines with the Jesel belt drive installed. I've seen a few Weber equipped small blocks though.

Anyone have a picture of a Jesel belt drive installed on their small block? I was mostly interested in how the water pump mounted.

The Jesel catalog doesn't show any installed pictures and it doesn't list out which water pumps work with their belt drive.

I can answer this. They don't offer anything to hook up a water pump. They don't even give you specific instructions for the kit they sold you for $1,400+. I designed my own and they will be finished soon. Maybe this is whay they don't sell many of these kits.

I will have pics soon as I am putting everything together right now.

By your statement you mean you are designing a water pump assembly for the belt drive or the belt drive WITH a water pump assembly?

Water pump spacers, there was a pic in the motor plate thread.

Dave Weber at least designed a pair of water pump spacers etc to go with his belt drive. The big problem is the number of belt drives for a small block Mopar that Jesel sell, I imagine they don't see designing anything else as being viable. Unless I was doing it for my own engine, I don't think I would bother myself. It would be stock I would be sitting on for a considerable amount of time.

My prototype spacers will be blank (as for the water pump) since I use a radiator mounted pump. I am changing the parts to accept a front mounted water pump though.

Stewart,

That plate setup looks nice and well thought out. How would you adapt this setup to a motor plate that is installed into a vehicle that used a stock timing cover previously? Looks like the plate stacked on top of the Jesel cover won't get you 2.5".

As far as I can tell, an electric water pump bolts directly to the Jesel belt drive.

Are you trying to use a belt driven water pump with a Jesel belt drive?

You are correct about being able to bolt a pump directly to the belt drive cover on a tall deck block. The problem is on a short deck block as the bolt just above the water inlet hole is not in the correct location to direct mount a pump. It is slightly lower so it fits into the block without breaking thru the deck surface. This is why everyone has to have adapters to put a pump on the short deck engines. Another issue occurs when the factory timing cover thickness is 2.50" and the Jesel cover is ~.82" and you need to make provisions for a motor plate that has frame tabs in the old location (factory timing cover). Most people going to a belt drive were probably not set up for one originally.
I was on vacation last week and have just now picked back up where I left off.
Lots of different configurations are possible and that doesn't help the problem and is probably a big reason that nobody makes these in any "standard" configuration as it won't be profitable.

Jesel makes a cover for the standard 318-340-360 block so a stock type water pump will mount up directly.

If you're using a low deck block then it is tougher. I don't know if anyone is making a low deck electric water pump or not. I'm sure it could be tooled up, just not sure if anyone has done it.

I'd think most bracket race guys would be running a tall block. Either a stock LA block or a Mopar replacement block.

I can see the issue if the tabs on the frame were in the wrong location. I think it might be easier to move the tabs than to create spacers or adapters on the Jesel cover but I suppose one could go either way.

That looks to me to be a standard Jesel part number. CVR-32845. I don't think it is a surrounding plate, it is just one large machined block that Jesel builds for certain applications. As far as I know, you can call up Jesel and order that cover. It is listed in the catalog and has a price.

Brian, we just machined away what we didn't need of the high dollar MP low deck timing cover for use with the Weber belt drive.

I found another solution so I did not follow up but this is a "R3" housing that Meziere has.

They said the measurements:

Left side C to C = 1.754

Right side C to C = 1.748 (probably both 1.75)

Lower holes C to C = 7.965

Upper holes C to C = 6.771

Do you have part # for this thanks Brett

Sorry I don't they just sent the info I posted to me in an email. He (Don Meziere) said he did not know if it was for an R3 or R4 block. I have not seen it on their website.

I would just send them the photo and the specs and I bet that would be enough.

just checked bolt spacing it must be for R4 as R3 and stock bolt pattern do not match the spacing you gave. thanks Brett

Meziere can make R3 short deck water pump housings. He has the dimensions and it is a fairly easy variation on the standard LA water pump housing. Whether he wants to or not is a different question. I suppose if enough people asked for a short deck water pump setup he would build them.

It is probably a lot easier to just drill and tap for AN fittings and then run an external water pump. The external pump is a better solution in most cases anyway.

Meziere does make an R-3 electric water pump as I have one on my R-3 engine. I don't know the part number but I know it fits...

AndyF, do you think that it would be worth us making a universal front-drive kit? Are the Moroso, Jesel and MSD units dead on accurate, or is there room for improvement? Thanks.

Tough call. The Jesel distributor is really very simple. I suppose if you can come up with a better mousetrap then they'll sell, but that is such a simple distributor I'd be hard pressed to figure out how to make it better.

Re: Anyone have pictures of SB Jesel belt drive? - 06/27/12 06:46 AM

I have an MSD front drive on one car and a Jesel on the other. Not sure if there is any improvements you can make to them. They really are very rudimentary. Since they are all crank trigger pieces there just is not much too them and no need to adjust them really. Just set it up once and be done with it.

I recall reading on Speedtalk that a few guys had issues with the Jesel units cross firing because of attaching hardware in the distributor, or something to that effect anyway. It was quite a few years ago. Jesel was using a Mallory cap etc for their units. Not sure if they are now.
I have one down in the garage, there really isn't a lot to them.
