Fun first Pass with the Rocky at Z-max tonight - 06/09/12 03:01 AM

Had a little fun with my buddy Brad tonight at Zmax.

This was my first real pass in the Rocky, felt pretty good and it hooked like I can really lay into it next time out. I need to get out on a deserted (wide) road to see what it'll really do when I Lay into the throttle, (If you listen you can probably hear me easing it out past the 60' cone before nailing it WOT). But I'll tell you that 1000HP Pro systems carb doesn't feel BIG AT ALL on a stroker small block.

Went a real Easy 11.81 @ 114.43 with a 1.75 60', felt like it's got a lot more in it in the first 1/2 of the track. I leaned the jets from 84/6.5PV Pri and 90 down to 82/6.5 and 88, felt a little cleaner up top but the air was hot ~84 degrees. I took the scoop off for a little sleeper effect. As if Anyone knows what the heck it is anyway, lol.

It was fitting (and way FUN!!) being lined up against a tweaked Z06, The guy and his LS Tuner posse were all in the staging lanes and it was obviously making some MAD Top end power. He also had some 335 Mega-wide gumbo drag radials on it. But there's nothing like smoking an $85,000 sports car for your first decent pass down the track. Well...technically It was my second pass since I did an easy mid 13 second gear start just to run through the newly installed JVX manual valve body and to see what the top end of the track looked/felt like...the shut down at ZMAX goes on forever!!

Zmax is an awesome facility!!

Fly,

I could feel the front end jump and I knew if I stayed in it and layed into it it might have been Epic; but I guess I'm still feeling this thing out. The brakes are a bit sketchy with the big cam and a vacuum reservoir the power brakes aren't all they could be up top yet.

Everyone comments that the short wheelbase might be squirrelly but to be honest up top it feels very stable and tracks arrow straight.

That's pretty cool Bobby.I know it has a lot more in it but if that vette guy could drive it would be a different outcome. He looked pretty bad in the burnout box and the starting line.

Happy for you though! Now turn up the heat and see what she can really do.

George,

Yeah I was thinking I could have easily put that vette well into the 10's. But a Kill's a Kill in my book But last night I just wanted to make a clean easy pass to see how it felt going through the gears because of the trans issue I had with ther maiden voyage. After I put the new FMVB in it I took the old vb out from the original rebuild and sure enough it had the wrong year T/A plate in it. I like the manual VB better anyway though.

I shifted at ~6400 and the motor wanted to pull higher, I needed to re-lash the valves so I didn't wind her up like she wanted to go.

Re: Fun first Pass with the Rocky at Z-max tonight - 06/10/12 02:26 PM

I had thought about making another quick hot lap pass but I felt a very faint tick on the return road...like the lash loosened up. So I wanted to run the valves after the first pass but they (fortuantely were running rounds so slow there wasn't time before the noise curfew. Good thing I didn't have time anyway because (see new thread) I found a broken rocker arm adjuster stud yesterday afternoon.

So....ALWAYS trust your instincts

Glad you finally got a good run...now put your big boy pants on and flat foot that thing out the gate!
J/K Bobby, you know I gotta give you a hard time! Sounds like it's definitely running good...good kill too!

Been away a while, wanted to seek some feedback on the incrementals.

I think the converter has a fair amount of slip up top, since I was showing 6600 RPM at the stripe with 30" tires. I think the motor will pull to 7000-7200 next time out

60' 1.755
330' 4.914
660' 7.548
1/8mph 92.89
1000' 9.852
1320' 11.812
1/4mph 114.43.

Pretty confident it will click a 1.5 ish 60', the 1/8 and 1/4 are pretty quick for a 1.755 60'.

I sent for a quote to Lenny at UCC since he comes so well recommended and he's local to me.

I'm also thinking about going to a low gear 904 and changing the rear from the 4.56 to 3.91s....eventually.

Runs really good and sounds good as well. I saw your exhaust vid too.

What made you use the car you did? Was it something you just had laying around? Just a question.

Great job.

Re: Fun first Pass with the Rocky at Z-max tonight - 06/20/12 01:51 AM

Thanks Buddy,

I actually bought it with a 318 in it that a guy up in southern Virginia used to bracket race running dead consistent mid 14's with it.

The chassis just hooks so "naturally" that it seemed a great fit for a nice mild roller stroker motor in it. I've had the jones to build a small block stoker for a while and after several A, B and E bodies over the years I wanted to have something a little bit 'different'...so the little Rocky was a great fit for me. Being only 12' long and with the high ground clearence, it's really easy to work on with PLENTY of room to work around (unlike the Charger) in the garage.

It's really really FUN to race and roll up in the lanes with Everybody seems to love it and root for it at the line. I'd actually love to do another one but here in the states they are very Rare and kind of tough to get a hold of. Ironically they are very popular in Asia and apparently Australia (I think they're called Feroza's over there) as well.

Re: Fun first Pass with the Rocky at Z-max tonight - 06/21/12 08:03 PM

I talked a bit with Lenny at Ultimate Converter today and he viewed the pass on Youtube. He thinks the combos got a lot more in it and says it's best to wait on any converter recommendations (if any are needed) until I get some hard launch data to work from. I was really impressed to hear that kind of honesty and that the converter I have may actually be a good choice overall for the combo and the way I want to use it (go fast but not flip over). But if he thinks he make make it really step up I'll be getting a new from him for sure.

Lenny is a super nice guy and very VERY knowledgable, I can tell you I really look forward to working with him on all my automatic toys. He took the time to call me from Connecticut to respond to my Spec for quote worksheet while he was visiting with his new Grandbaby! Congratulations to Lenny and his family and Thanks!

Re: Fun first Pass with the Rocky at Z-max tonight - 06/22/12 01:32 PM

George, Actually there's PLENTY of Hood clearance, I bought the scoop because the old owner already cut a hole and had (of all things) an old Coronet side scoop that wasn't even symmetrical when laid from side to side! That's a Victor intake with a 2" HVH super sucker under the carb PLUS I run a 4" x 14" K&N and it clears the hood with at least an inch to spare.

I'm looking for another Rocky hood but Rocky's are like finding Hen's teeth.

Rick, BTW, that's a firecore 50 set of Wires but the coil wire was too short so I had to use an old set of Jacobs I had laying around.

Awesome setup. A kid I went to highschool with had a Rocky the same color. It's probably still floating around the lincolnton, Nc area if you feel like going on a wild goose chase.
