The all new Barry Grant Street Demon carb

The all new Barry Grant Street Demon carb - 05/03/12 02:29 AM

It appears to be a 3 barrel, AVS/Thermoquad influenced design. You can even order it with a plastic main body.

... only 625cfm, though?

Might be ok for a 318?

And it has both Ford AND Chevy trans kickdown hookups...which is very helpful?

Hmm

I didn't think there was a market for something like this. Maybe it is just a factory replacement type deal for all the old crusty units out there???

Same here, which is why I am trying to understand

It seems to be the answer to a question nobody asked?

Anyway it should be interesting to see who gets one and how it works out.

I was just shopping for some idle feed restriction jets for my Race Demon...found both the big J and the big S don't have them listed on their website, then I found a post here where Brad H. stated it doesn't look like the quick fuel or other brands of jets will fit correctly in the hole in a BG carb, so then I thought I might have to try BG direct tomorrow. Then stumbled across that carb, and began to ponder how they came up with that product idea.

It was enough of a "Now what the heck is that?" moment, thought I would put it up here...

Oh lovely, that figures

Thanks for the input even if it's bad news, guess I will call them anyway....in the (unlikely) event they log customer call topics, maybe it will help show a little bit of a demand for them.

Might look into the quick fuel ones anyway since they're more readily available....maybe if the od of the restrictor jet was reduced slightly or a counterbore was added to the metering block they could be made to work. I'd rather not be cutting on the metering block, though.

Re: The all new Barry Grant Street Demon carb - 05/03/12 03:27 PM

Yep I sort of gathered that....their area code changed from Georgia to Kentucky so that pretty much tells the tale.

I'm on the phone with them right now, am not expecting miracles but it doesn't hurt to let them know...

Re: The all new Barry Grant Street Demon carb - 05/03/12 03:49 PM

I gave them the part number for the ifr set, at first they couldn't figure out what it was...then I told them what it was, no longer produced but will most likely go back into production towards the end of this year if things go according to plan.

Nice guy on the phone and he explained what HPI's plan is for Demon: bring street carbs back ASAP, then race carbs later. He stated most of the machining operations and programs need to be reworked and it's taking a long time.

square carbs dont seem to sell very well, what happened to predator carbs??

Re: The all new Barry Grant Street Demon carb - 05/03/12 05:09 PM

The folks at BG were always super creative. They've come up with tons of unique carb designs over the years. But the execution never really matched the design.

I've heard that the new owners are trying to fix the manufacturing problems. I'd actually like to work with those guys but I'm not interested in moving across the country. It would be kind of cool to work with all those different carb designs and get them dialed in.

Their new Thermoquad knock off is an interesting idea. That really was a pretty good carb design. No idea if anyone will buy the carbs or not, but it is a cool design. It should be a very good carb for a moderate power daily driver.

Looks like there would be a market to me. Looks like the perfect carb for street rods or cruisers and street machines as well as a retrofit carb for older carbureted cars and trucks still on the road.

I hope you are right, hope they sell lots of them.

That was pretty near the same as my thought process, but I hope I'm wrong.

Someone needs to talk to them about making a strip kit for the older avs and thermo quads. They could sell a lot of those.

looks like this new carb is being marketed as a replacement with response and economy as its benefits. I hope they back it up with a 1000 cfm performance model.

Looks like a modern thermoquad

Re: The all new Barry Grant Street Demon carb - 05/04/12 03:55 PM

Looks like a strategic move by Holley to move into the Edelbrock AFB/AVS space which a lot of "hobbiest/non-racers" seem to prefer over the typical 4150/4160 style carb. Holleys previous attempts at an AFB style "open top/cast in float bowl" carbs have never really caught on.

So is this a 500 CFM "small venturi" carb that they get 625 out of with the Goggle style big 3 barrel? I'll wait for the 1000cfm version off the 800 body, I have an 800AVS on my 427 Cobra that I'm extremely happy with on a 500 hp motor where Tractibility on the roll-on is better and a double pumper is maybe not the best fit for.

Re: The all new Barry Grant Street Demon carb - 05/25/12 06:26 PM

BG is listing these as having 1 3/8" primary bores, which would basically be OEM sizes for smallblocks.
From http://ramchargercentral.com/engine/thermoquad-guide/:
Quote:

The Thermo-Quad was available with two primary throttle bore sizes, 1-3/8"
and 1-1/2". Flow ratings (CFM) vary depending on the source, but
the TQs with the 1-3/8" bores are listed as 750-800 CFM and those with the
1-1/2" primary throttle bores are rated at 800-850 CFM. All TQs have the
2-1/4" diameter secondary throttle plates. The primary bore size depended
on application. In general, all 78 and later 318s and 360s and all 340s had
the smaller bore. Earlier 360s varied depending on application, most 400s
and all 440s had the large bore. The 9000 series have the small primary bore
and were rated by Carter at 800 cfm. Later TQs (ie, Lean Burn and ESA
applications, feedback systems) are quoted with less flow ratings, but
this is due to the control of the carburetion system, not the inherent
flow capability of the basic carburetor. The internal metering is set for
leaner running conditions for Lean Burn. Either bore size can be tuned
to run well on most engine combinations. The smaller bore offers a slight
increase throttle response but less overall flow. The different bore sizing,
ie. speadbore, is an aspect that can lead to increased fuel economy while
delivering similar wide open throttle (WOT) performance to an equivalent
standard bore configuration. The adjustability of the TQ and the
spreadbore configuration allows the use of a large CFM carburetor on
a small displacement engine.

I'm curious how well this would work on a '65 413HP? I'm not sure I want to be a guinea pig for it, although if it's a bad fit I believe Summit would take it back with no questions.

And I wonder if an OEM 1 1/2" baseplate could be installed, would it fit and would it work well???

I just sent my demon back today to be checked out and it went to Dalahoga (sp) Ga. Sales maybe handled through Holley but tech must still be in GA.

Interesting product!

The old Holley 3-barrel required a single-plane or you had to clearance the spot between the two secondary bores at the intake due to the oblong shape of the long/wide blade???

They would look cool and be fun (1250 cfm) on an old school T-ram!

I'm getting ready to bolt one on my 446 in my 1986 RC that I basically built for towing and hauling my family around. I'm hoping that it does well.

I just done a search in Google to see if someone as tried this already and found this thread.

Re: The all new Barry Grant Street Demon carb - 11/07/12 01:42 PM

I have been very interested in this carb for some time now. I have to build a 350 chevy in a month or so and the customer wants the edelbrock 2-4 intake on it. I am think these carbs would be great on a 2-4 application. I have also had lots of trouble with fuel "boil over" during heat soak. Think I'll try to plastic bowl ones.

Re: The all new Barry Grant Street Demon carb - 11/08/12 12:11 PM

Well I'm not sure if I should post this here, but what a fight. They really didn't engineer this for us mopar guys at all.

The throttle bolt (that they say is for Chrysler and that is sold separately) wouldn't fit my accelerator cable at all.

Either side of the bolt stud....then you have to put the cable up high so that it will clear the carb stuff on the throttle linkage.

Took my four hole 1 in spacer out of it and that seem to help that, but now my three piece kick down won't even go on now cause of the throttle being to low.

They need to make bracket like Holley, and Edelbrock makes.

I guess that I have one of those and I'll try and just modify it to fit the Street Demon.
