Going to dyno my 496 tommrow. I am so exited!!! Just wondering what everyone thinks it will make for tq/HP

Specs
496 Using Muscle Motors kit. Should be little north of 10-1 Compression
Edelbrock head CNC ported by Modern Cylinder heads. Flow 328int/268ex.
Solid Roller cam by Straighline
w 1.5 rockers.
Intake .645 Duration 300 Centerline@108
Ex. .626 Duration 314 Centerline @116

Intake is a ported Holley SD to clear my hood on my RR. Also going to try a M1 on the dyno
950 Demon for a carb.

I'm assuming SD stands for Strip Dominator,I'll guess between 610-650 hp range,,what headers are being used?,,2inch primaries?

Hey Jim good luck tomorrow. I wanted to go with Todd but couldn't get off from work. Any normal 496 like yours would probably make about 600 hp but with the Hoven brothers working on it I'll have to say 685 hp and 575 ft.lbs.

Re: Going to the Dyno in the AM...Guess the HP - 04/11/12 01:30 PM

In the early 90s we had a 499ci with a set of 906s that my brother ported, an M1 /with a 9375 1050, a solid lifter cam and 2" fenderwells.

On it's 1st outing at ATCO, in ran a string of 10ohs at 135 change. The car had SS prings, footbraked and weighed 3380.

We never dynoed that one because it was just a lowbuck streetcar. Your engine has to make more than that thing did.

I've never been to the dyno, but I'm guessing I'm around 570ish and he has WAY more engine than I have...and 50 more cubic inches.

The cam looks like a blower or NOS cam so my guess testing it N/A will be around 650, maybe as high as 675 HP and 610 to 630 Ft Lbs My 505 with Jeffs CNC RPM heads made 687 HP at 5900 RPM with a 1050 Dominator on a M1 and 1.0 inch open phenolic spacer with a lot smaller roller cam Good luck

Re: Going to the Dyno in the AM...Guess the HP - 04/11/12 03:17 PM

Roller lift/duration is well matched to the Modern CNC eddies. If the SD is ported like I do them that motor should EASILY make at least 635-640 Hp and either way it's gonna be a near perfect street/strip brawler, perfect for 3.54 gears. Out of the box a SD will flow around 270, ported they can go over 310.

Very similar to my old 508 which was a 610hp recipie with a 252/258 straight line hydraulic roller and ported iron Stage V heads. Either way, I like the combo a lot but I'd prefer (having run both) the tighter 108 lobe spread for a little more "hit" in the 2500-4500 'fun zone'.

Nice combo....I predict.... happiness

how can you say a guy that has 56 more cubic inches is only going to make 30 more hp?

Horsepower is limited by airflow when the engine gets big enough.

What was the nature of the problem? What was the torque looking like? J.Rob

i think the engine gains 10hp per 100 more rpm on the dyno +/- to what the cam, carb, heads will allow.

how does that happen? lack of oil? I would think they'd make a bunch on noise before they siezed up...

Possible the springs are too stiff for those rockers ?

Have you ever dynoed and engine or been present for one ? You aren't in the room with the engine, headers are usually open, there is a lot of noise .

In his case using rockers rated below the spring pressure.

just chassis dyno.

Just talked to Comp. They said those rockers should be fine with my spring pressures.(or at least the new design ones.)

I thought this came up before and that 500 was the number ?? Are yours considered the new design ?

Mods to your rocker oiling ???

Are they going to warranty them ?

Re: Going to the Dyno in the AM...Guess the HP - 04/12/12 10:04 PM

Are these the Comp Pro Magnums? Seems like a few people were having those rockers bushed due to the steel-against- steel galling..... Never mind, i see you have started another post.

Re: Going to the Dyno in the AM...Guess the HP - 04/12/12 10:34 PM

my 440 made 590ftlb at 4800 but stopped at 605 at 5800 cam at 104 solid. now at 108 and it picked up a strong >4 to .5 in the 1/4.
i may put it in at 110 this season.....

Re: Going to the Dyno in the AM...Guess the HP - 07/22/12 08:12 PM

Ok finally got back to the dyno. Same combination execept Harlond Sharp rockers......

657.5 hp @ 6100
638.6 tq @ 4800

on Sunoco 93!!

Video of pull

Tried a M1 with 1" spacer on it also....
ran 1 hp under the sd. The sd had a more straight curve to it. the m1 was very choppy. Sorry can't find the sheet right now for the M1 so no exact numbers.

All in all made 16 pulls yesterday. Only "scare" was losing 50hp on the first run with the M1. found a piece of bowl gasket in the front jet. No harm no foul!!

Very Happy!!!

Nice numbers.

Wondering what your .050 duration numbers are on the cam?

Re: Going to the Dyno in the AM...Guess the HP - 07/23/12 05:16 PM

Hey Jim congrats on finally get that thing running on the dyno. Made some good numbers Todd and Duane were keeping me posted. I unfortunately was working in an attic (the exciting life of an HVAC guy) in Toms River while you guys were having fun. I couldn't believe that the M1 wasn't a little better than the SD. Now hurry up and get it in the car and see what it does. I'm saying 10.50 at 127-128. Good luck. And tell us what the @.050 numbers are and the lobe seperation.
