69 Barracuda modification. Rolling

69 Barracuda modification. Rolling - 04/03/12 03:10 AM

It was a good running car that did consistent 10.20s in a peruvian track that was not the best, so I decided to loose some weight instead of going for a bigger motor. It was hard to make the first cut but after that it only took a couple of days to remove the old rollbar, the complete floor and the old frame. Here's some pictures so you guys can critique my work

Nice work but I have to ask... why didnt you go with
round tube(moly) it would have been a lot lighter
than the big rectangular

R u planing to keep the 8 3/4?

Re: 69 Barracuda modification-Pictures - 04/06/12 04:17 AM

Thank you guys for the feedback.

Sixpackgut: you're right, it was hard to start cutting the car. What I did first was remove the engine, transmision, rear end, gages etc. things you can remove with tools. Tried to fool myself by thinking that everything could be bolted back. Then I went to the airport to pick up my parts, after that I finally made the decision to make the first cut,the front right compact so there was no turning back. Now that I started building the car back I'm really happy thinking it's going to be a better race car.

Mr.P body: you're right, cromoly tubbing is lighter but you need to stress relieve the welds and there is no oven big enough in Peru, that I know of, to do that. Also i'm using square tubbing frame because it is more generic and easier to build.

The car was a 2650 and I'm shooting for a 2200 finish without my 220 pounds.

About the 8 3/4, she stays. With the 35 axles, spool and the light weight of the car, she will be ok.

The 2 rear frame rails and the four link kit are from Competition Engineering . The front rails and the rear cross member 3x2 tubbing is local.

It's been 5 weeks since I started. The first 3 weeks was working 10 hours a day, 5 days a week and the last two weeks on and off. I might need two more weeks to get it running and ready for testing.

Re: 69 Barracuda modification. Rolling - 06/25/12 02:57 PM

I just caught this thread....I had never seen it before.

Well, I'm sorry to say that my friend Carlos Bustamante passed away yesterday after taking his car to the track for the first time (the one featured in this thread).

He layed a 9,83 with his newly built car and achieved his goal of getting in the 9s.

Later that day after unloading his car at home and having some cofee, his heart decided to stop beating at 1 am.

Funeral services will be held today.

RIP Carlos.

We are Carlos Bustamante´s daughter and son. Our dad started this proyect about 4 months ago and his goal was acomplished(9 seconds car). He had a great day surrounded by family and friends, ran 9.75 first time out on the track. His pasion was Drag Racing and he left in his house while talking about cars, still with his racing apparel and after reaching his goal. Moments before he told us how happy and accomplished he felt. He left happy, with joy and suffered no pain, the way he would of wanted it to be.
