What is your 451 or 470 Stroker Gas Mileage ~ No Joke - 03/30/12 09:51 PM

I am building either a 451 or 470 400 stroker and will run pump gas. Curious what your real world (not foot in it) gas mileage is. Most of the events I will be going to are about 100 mile round trips or more. Yes I will be driving it to the strip. I am really interested to hear mileage numbers. Please let me know recipe and also your gear ratio. I am building a street/strip motor but the reality is I need to drive to events and will. Any info appreciated

600 HP RB 452 on 93-octane pump gas that got 7-9 MPG on the highway. Car ran mid-10s in street trim after driving to & from track.

My 493 does about 6 to 7 miles per gallon I would say also. My old 440 got a good 12 miles to the gallon keeping my foot out of it. But I was surprised how much fuel the 493 uses. I did have to jet up alot and it seems to get about half the milage the 440 got. But I am not in this hobby to worry about gas milage because if I was I would be in a different hobby. Ron

Yeah not in the hobby for gas mileage either, but the reality is costs are costs. Gas cost maybe a factor in how many events i do this year.

Of course, your mileage may vary. LOL!!

I'm thinking it's going to be really good Smiles Per Gallon, too!

Mine is a mild 451 in a 72 Dart. Speedo never worked but am in the process of putting in a 6spd and EZ Efi. Should be ready in a couple months. Still won't have vacuum advance but I'm hoping for at least 15mpg.

Got a 451 in a duster, about 550 hp. 4.10 gear 30" tall tire.

Drove it on the power tour a couple of years ago. Got between 8 - 10 mpg.

mr. scamp runs 10.60, pump gas 496. 30" tall tire, 3.73 gear, 14 mpg @ 60 mph if i'm REALLY careful. if i touch the throttle? 0 mpg. hey, it takes fuel to make power. i think i could easily run it dry in 10-15 minutes of maniacal pedalfest.

Just wondering what you think the cost of towing the car home will be if you break down at the track? Would investing in a open trailer not be something to look at if you own a truck and if no truck then I hope you don't break down.

AAA is a lot cheaper than a truck and trailer.

Mine's a 496. 10.2 CR, 243@.050 cam, EFI, 5 speed OD, 3.23 rear and 25" tires. It gets 14 highway at 75 or so. 11-12 around town. That's neither babying it nor riding it. If I ride it its in the single digits.

First year we went on DragWeek, we took a 78 d-100 with a 496 and a Dominator. 6 to start out, then learned how to drive and jet it ended up at 9-10. Most guys were going down 10 jet sizes between driving, and racing with a Dominator.
Got 12 last year with the stroker small block, 8" converter, and 3.89 gears...31 tall tire though.

I have a 440 motor with a 3.90 stroke crank and 4.350 bore, 464 C.I., Eddy RPM heads and stock type vacume six pak carbs jetted for best WOT performance, 10.5 to 1 compression ratio, Oregon non ethanol 91 octane pump swill. The car is a 3450 lb Duster with me in it and a full tank of pump gas, 4.10 gears and 315x60x15 M/T ET Street Radials tires, 727 with both a 10 inch and 8 inch converter. Best (SWAG)guessimate(speedo is off )is maybe 12 to 14 MPG driving it at road speeds doing the 55 MPH speed limit for any distances Local driving with a occasional blast to clean the plugs results in a lot less MPG The right foot controls the fuel milegages and the exposure to tickets Car runs in the high tens in the 1/4 mile with that motor I have a dual wide ban O2 system on the car and I ended up jetting the center carb. to have a AFR of 14.8 or higher, depending on throttle position, at 2100 RPM cruise

I did not mean the comment about not worrying about gas milage or being in the wrong hobby as trying to be smart or did not mean it towards you.

To be honest if I drive real easy and cruise the highway about 55 mph I can get about 10 out of my 63. Its a 493 with an 850 DP and I use a Dynamic 9.5 converter that will flash about 4200 at the track. Has 4.30's with a 30" tire. I still have alot of tuning to do but I do jet for mph and performance not for milage. But thats just me. I guess you could say I worry about milage some as I built it to be a pump gas eng as no way did I want to run race gas in my street car. That would take me broke. Ron

Re: What is your 451 or 470 Stroker Gas Mileage ~ No Joke - 03/31/12 03:43 AM

The 471 I ran in my 69 Charger would turn a consistent 16 mpg on the highway. No joke.

10.7:1 CR w/Edelbrock heads. 4.10 gears, 28" tires... and a Keisler 5 speed w/ 0.64 OD. Cruised at like 2800 rpm IIRC. Ran low 13's at about 110 granny shifting.

The key component was actually the 870 street avenger that I tuned to the edge using a wideband O2 and data logger (Innovate LM-1).

Got about 9 mpg around town. I hit 18 mpg once or twice on some long flat highway runs.

If (big if) I keep my foot out of it I get 10mpg with my tank.

470, Mighty Demon 850, Edelbrock Performer RPM, 259 @ 0.050 cam, 4:30 gears, and 4000 rpm converter on 275-60-15's

Re: What is your 451 or 470 Stroker Gas Mileage ~ No Joke - 03/31/12 12:30 PM

My son and I drove my truck to a car show about 3 years ago. Drove it real easy and never got into the secondaries. It averaged 13mpg. 528 Hemi, 10.4-1 MP 614/598 solid cam, 10" TA convertor, 4.56 gears, 31" tall tires. I'd tuned the dual thermoquads so at cruise they were about 15.2-15.6 a/f ratio. The motor made 683ftlbs. of torque, very little throttle opening was required to keep it at 55-60mph.Dave

Haven't had a working odometer in years, but best guess using mapquest data is around 11. It would be better if I would take the time to lean out the transition circuit, she's real rich at around-town speeds...I bought the meter but have not put the time into it.

410 SB... 6 mpg

Thank you for all the input. I would really like to go the 470 route and if I could get 10 mpg on longer trips that would be great. It would take discipline to stay out of it but if the reward is some trips down the track I think I would be willing.

I average 9 mpg with mixed highway and city, including 20 mile grades.

496" RB, 91 octane, 10.44:1, low .600 lift solid cam, 2.76 rear gears. Most highway speeds aren't even enough to get me above the converter stall.

At 140 mph, turning 4900 I averaged 10.8 mpg for the 90 miles of the Silver State Classic.
