I also use Amzoil 10 w 40 dominator racing oil in the hot rod.My engine builder recomended it , said he has torn down many engines to freshen them up and was impresed with the minimal wear on bearing surfaces.I also use it in my cummins powered dually , 295,388 and still goin strong.

I have used Castrol Syntec for many years. I run alcohol and put 75 passes on my oil before changing it. Bearings look brand new in most cases.

Re: Synthetic oil questions............... - 03/09/12 10:54 AM

I run synthetic oil in every thing I own including the diff, trans and synthetic grease in the wheel bearings. I've used Mobil 1 10W30 in my old engine and I'm using 5W20 in the new one. I may change that to 5W30 though as I'm just not secure with the lower oil pressure readings. I know it's enough pressure just never have run an engine with that little. Anyway Amsoil is also good just a little harder to get for me.

Mobil One 15w50 synthetic in my hemi and my 440. It's getting hard to find now though. Both look great when I tore em down to freshen them up after a LOT of passes and street miles.

Re: Synthetic oil questions............... - 03/09/12 05:53 PM

I've been using Amsoil synthetics in everything for years. My engine trans and differential builders have all commented on how good the parts look on teardown. They have a wide variety of high zinc oils to fit any needs. Personally I use the 5w-20 Dominator series in my race car.

Amsoil tech bulliten on flat tappet cams.

Amsoil source & more info.

I use 5W-30 Mobile 1 and mix it with 15W-50 Mobile 1

When its on sale I use 15w 50 Napa synthetic oil with a bottle of Redline zinc additive. Normally I use non synthetic 25w 50 racing pennzoil.

VALVOLINE VR1 SYNTHETIC. Man this stuff is slippery. 10 W 40 for us. I believe I can tell a difference in how the motor revs up when I have this stuff in it. It just seems to respond quicker and feels smoother.

There is at least a 200 RPM difference in idle speed on my engine from mineral to synthetic.

Re: Synthetic oil questions............... - 03/10/12 06:08 AM

Always broke my motors in and first couple of trips to the track on Shell Rotella then switched to Mobile 1 15-50. 15 years and 3 engines I only had to put in new bearings once in one (the stroker) and one timing chain and the only part that I ever lost was 1 alum roller rocker, probably out lived itself. Mobile 1, in my opinion, is as good as most any out there. The best oil on the planet cannot replace quality machine work though.

Re: Synthetic oil questions............... - 03/10/12 08:53 AM

If you have bearing clearances that are on the race side,(.025 or more) I would stick with a good race 20x50 or race syn 15x50. Thump you drive on the street and do hammer it once in a while, so your oil will be warm and need the higher viscosity to protect the bearings.
Thats assuming you have the .025 or more clearance in the motor. Tighter than that and I would call the oil manufacturer for their recommendations. As a side note, the new Mustang Shelby engine requires a 5w50. I am betting the wide spread is to accommodate tight bearing clearances for warm up and the high power level at running temps.

Re: Synthetic oil questions............... - 03/10/12 04:50 PM

Yes Greg my clearances are in the .025-.030 area but even the Valvoline 5w30 has excellent pressures when hot and in the past it was good w/10w30 Royal Purple syn. oils I tried. After I leak the motor down, I`ll try Mobile-1 in the 10w30 range and go from there. Are you still out here?

Re: Synthetic oil questions............... - 03/10/12 11:32 PM

Quakerstate 5/40 synthetic from 1999 to 2010
Lucas Oil 10/30 in the new engine also synthetic

No problems at all.
Only in my race engines.

They've been taking zinc out of many diesel oils as well. It's not easy keeping up with what has how much unless it's obviously advertised. There are some oils for 2007 and newer diesels. Their catalytic converters are part of the reason they took sulfer out of the fuel also.

15W40 diesel dino oils are about 1,200 ppm zinc these days. The synthetics are a bit higher.

Re: Synthetic oil questions............... - 03/11/12 11:26 PM

last time i went on line and compaired brad pen oil zinc and the phosphers amount to rotella and the 1300 it was a tad less or real close and to me not worth the extra price.
that would be bradpenn regular oil

Re: Synthetic oil questions............... - 03/12/12 10:04 PM

My is if you still intend to drive it everywhere on the street like you did pre-rebuild, don't put anything thinner than a 10W40 in it. Spend some time looking at how the xW30 wts thin out at the operating temps that street cars see, plus check out their low(er) HTHS (Hi Temp / Hi Shear) ratings. HTHS #s have shown a strong correlation between higher #s and better protection in hi-stress components of the engine.
