ENGINE DIAPER OR BELLY PAN ?

ENGINE DIAPER OR BELLY PAN ? - 02/07/12 05:15 AM

With the new NHRA rule changes. Im wondering what some of you are going to run a engine diaper or a custom belly pan. I have a caps tubular k and would like a belly pan but with my headers and the rules I just dont see it possible. Anyone have some pictures of belly pans or diapers installed on a non-tubbed chassis car?

I was contemplating the same thing. I have decided to go with a diaper. The purpose is for fluid containment and I just can't see how a belly pan can keep the oil contained at speed. I know they functionally help in other ways and don't trap heat, but I just can't believe they would hold the oil from blowing out of a big hole in the side of a pan.

DIAPER!
I agree....can't see how a belly pan can contain the explosion of fluids when the block shatters.
Having been thru a catastrophic engine failure and the car going sideways at the 1/8th I will never run a car again without a diaper.

Contact Dennis @ DRE.
Great Guy to work with and the custom end product is very nicely crafted.

I think a diaper would be better also. But my concern is my headers hug the engine block so close Im concerned the diaper will burn. Anyone have pictures of a diaper on their car. On a stock type or tublar K frame front end?

Diaper can be made with heat cloth overlay in problem areas.
I can take and send you a picture of mine with the heat cloth overlay later this evening if you want.
Not installed on engine yet...still in box.
My headers will be 1/8" away from diaper.
DRE said it would not be a problem.
Let me know.

I have the DRE with a heat shield and they sit right on the header. I little singed, but still funtional. Just be sure the straps don't touch the header since they will burn through.

You line the pan with a PIG mat. Go to Newpig.com and check them out.

I was specifically talking about the the distance that the oil might have to fall for a bely pan to catch it. There is alot of turbulent air under a car at speed.

I bought Russlers pure junk 3.00 worth of a nylon type material that melted . It used straps like a helmet plus cheap plastic snap catches like on a kid's knap sack. there are no NHRA rules or specs for those not required to be SFI approved. You can tie an old hunk of a tarp to the car with duct tape and it would not only be better but still legal

I talked to Dennis at DRE yesterday about one for the Hemi. Said he puts double layer of heat protection close to the header area. Recomended not using it on the street though do to the heat of the headers. Said his take about 5 minutes to remove. Very nice/helpful guy.

Here is my belly pan its worked well for me.It has contained a coolant spill of several quarts I didnt know how much till I refilled the motor. There was no coolant standing in the pan as I made several more passes that day. It has a pig mat in the bottom held in place w/ aluminium screen. It doesnt hold in heat,I can remove or install it in about 10 minutes. It passes tech.I have no idea if it would contain everything in the evevt of a motor explosion. I do have at least 2 friends who use a simular pan on thier top sportsman cars that run over 200 mph. It has worked well for them also.
