440 Compression Question

440 Compression Question - 12/18/11 11:33 PM

I just bought a "mystery motor" 440. It's fresh, never run, with .030 pistons (which were claimed to be forged, if it matters) and a stock crank. At TDC, the pistons are about 1/8" from the deck surface. (I can get an exact measurement if needed).

With stock 906 iron heads, approximately what compression ratio do I have?

Thanks

i just took apart a nother motorhome block and they are in the hole about 1/8" also@ .040 over. so i agree 8 to 1 or so.

Thanks, guys. That's not gonna do much in a B or E body, huh?

Not without a blower or turbo.

well looking at pistons for a puller out of the motorhome stronger block i found that 10cc head volume is 1 point to 1.2 points lower or higher. my 440-1 heads are 54cc so a 10 to 1 @ 84cc is around 13 to 1 for me. but pistons are not that much compared to a set of heads with small chambers.
deck the block and deal with intake and push rod issues
running up at numidia i do wish i had more compression in my duster but it would not amount to much i bet going from 13 to 14 or 15 i bet.

Depends on what your goals are.

From another thread that I bookmarked:

I didn't read all the posts, but your stock rotating assembly will go 11's all day long. My 440 short block is a 1978 casting(including pistons) with an MP .557" solid cam, unported 906's milled to 80cc, M1 intake and a(stock) 750 vacuum. I had a Holley Street Dominator intake and it ran the same ET's as the M1. And I used a dingle ball hone on the block too, lol.

The convertor is a 4,000 stall and I drive it everywhere with 4.10 gears. The car weighs 3,330 with me and runs 11.70's all the time. It's gone 11's on 87 octane too. Not the best combination out there, but it's cheap and it works.

Here's another that I noticed just today on another site:

My two combos. I dont own this car anymore wish I did. 71 Challenger coupe. 440 stock bore forged replacement pistons, DC 284-484 cam, rebuilt 452 heads unported, Holley street Dominator, 750 Holley, 727 rebuilt, Turbo action rev manual vb, 3400 10 in convertor, 3.91 sure grip, 9x28 MT slicks, Hooker 1.78 Headers, This was a low comp engine regular unleaded. Best run 11.98 at 115mph, 12.00-12.20 car. sixty foot 1.66-1.68.

What you need is a 4" stroke crank!
