How big can you go with a RB Big Block? - 12/17/11 03:35 AM

Trying to find out max cubic inches from a big block if money was no object? Not thinking about practicality just a max cube.

Thanks Ed

Stock block or aftermarket? External or internal oil pick-up? I am shooting for 523 stock block 1/2" internal pick-up.

With a sleeved block and honda rod journals on the crank I think 572 is possible Ed.

I just finished an RB 493 and had to use an external oil pickup. I don't think more than 540 on a stock block.

I already have 540 with very little mods and it has been very reliable to date.

Just wondering if anyone has gone bigger?

You would have to move the oil pick-up diagonally up and to the outside as far as possible. That combined with the honda rod journels I believe will get you a 4.5 stroke. These people should be able to provide the block. http://www.speedomotive.com/ps-615-74-speed-o-motive-uber-block-assembled-custom-short-block.aspx Presto chango 572 4.5 x 4.5 Thats if I am spending your money. On my dime 523.

Ed the SS/AH cars use the honda journal so no problem there. The LS1 boys used that type of sleeveing on the stock LS1 block before big bore aftermarket blocks were available. It is a reliable but expensive process. Run it buy Mr. Porter an see what he says. I think it is possible and so does my engine builder.

Sometimes class rules dictate what you get to use. In F.A.S.T racing the stock block is the only game in town.

Here is my take...

540 is no problem, as you know-providing you have a "good" block..

I have sonic'ed a lot of Mopar wedge blocks. Never seen one that could possibly be bored 180 over to reach 4.5. Most are pretty scary after 4.375(55 over-the good ones). Although I have a freak block at the shop that might be able to go .090" or .100"?. While I have never actually done it, a 4-5/8" stroke with a .070" might be doable. It would have to be tall filled and even then it might be a time bomb. And I don't know how much more stroke you can get with the [Edited by Moparts - Family Friendly Site - Keep it clean] journal sizes and maintain the internal pickup. Of course you can move the pickup point a bit, but you do eventually reach a point of diminishing returns.

That being said, lets say 560" is about all you can hope for. And there are NO production wedge heads that will use it to its advantage, unlike Hemi's, canted valve big Fords, or BB Chevs..

I believe that Bird, Muscle Motors and Koffel have done 540" low decks in 400 blocks..

Check with them..

4.390 bore x 4.500 stroke..

Rick.

As stated not going to actually do this just looking to find out if anyone has built anything bigger then a 560.

My car was built for FAST and as the rule reads you must
use a stock block.

HP Mike built the Motor two years ago as a 540. 100% FAST legal and has been very reliable with over 100 passes on it. Best time to date 10.38 @ 133 on a six inch bias ply tire.

I am sorry Mike I should have said run it by you. I am getting old it sux. Mike sticking to Ed's perimeters on his post you don't think the Darton sleeved block is a viable option? Speedomotive is offering 4.22 bore 360 mopar blocks using that process.

Should I order my KB block with a raised cam so I can put a 5" arm in it?
