How to identify a Dodge Warlock?

How to identify a Dodge Warlock? - 10/12/11 05:26 AM

I want to check out this truck that this guy is selling as a Warlock, but it looks just like a normal D100. How can I identify whether its a Warlock or not? Is there a code or something in the VIN that separates them from regular D100's? Thanks.

No code in the vin.

Does it look like a warlock?

Original or redone?

Picture?

what year is it?
if 78-79 and still has the underhood equipment label look for code GK9.
76-77 models will not have this. they will have codes for seperate options that make up a Warlock.

I don't have a picture but it needs work. Theres nothing from the outside that says warlock to be because its just primered. It's a 77, is there a website or something with the codes I should be looking for? Thanks!

look for the pinstriping around the gauges and on the insides of the doors

Here is a post for a 1976 Dodge Warlock. If the body is in primer, look for the interior pin striping as suggested. (There is a picture of the dash on the link above.) Also look for gold wagon wheels and chrome steps. Here is a shot of the door pinstripe.

pinstriping & wood kits for warlocks are available, and have been for a long time. build sheet, window sticker, underhood numbers, etc., are the only way to be sure. doors are easily changed, as are dash fascias.

Re: How to identify a Dodge Warlock? - 10/12/11 11:28 PM

Sure - things can be changed and stripes could have been added. But it seems it would be a lot of effort for someone selling a project.

Re: How to identify a Dodge Warlock? - 10/12/11 11:32 PM

who's to say it wasnt done several owners ago? dont have to do it to sell it, do it because you like the stripes. i wouldnt buy a "warlock" based solely on some pinstripes. thats just me though. i'd have to see some documentation/numbers to back it up.

*66Plymouth440Six: i'm still very much loving that truck you shared....

what should be there are:
-dash bezel should be black (even if stipes are missing)
-Chrome side steps on bed (code: NF9)
-All glass will be tinted (no rear slider)
-Tuff wheel (2wd standard)
-bucket/console seat in black only

That could be the difficult part...my truck was missing the underhood label,no build sheet and had been repainted.Fortunately the interior stripes were all still in place, along with the rest of the options that made up the Warlock package.

Even with a good repaint which mine was not...original paint should be visible somewhere...seems like we have debated on here in the past if Warlocks in '77 were available in any other colors other than Sunfire Metallic Green,Black or Red as was advertised and Orange is a possibility. If the truck in question is originally one of those colors with the rest or most of the original package in place as mentioned, then it may be legit.

Could someone clone one easy enough...sure,is there a particular need just to sell..tough to say.Is an unrestored Warlock really worth anymore than any other truck in similiar condition..maybe,but not around here at least. Most normal people have no ideal what a Warlock even was, especially for '76/77 without the tailgate decal.

Re: How to identify a Dodge Warlock? - 10/13/11 03:53 PM

Lots of good info guys. It looks like it's going to be tough to tell.

Is there no information on the fender tag? Also what is the underhood sticker going to look like and what numbers am I going to be looking for on it?

It's tough to just accept the fact that it could be a Warlock because it has some pin stripes, buckets and a tuff wheel. You never know if someone just added that stuff on at a later point.

Re: How to identify a Dodge Warlock? - 10/13/11 04:36 PM

My core support/fender tag had no information that would specifically designate it as a Warlock but paint codes could be a starting point.

With any luck the underhood sticker is still in place and legible...mine was gone. There is also always the possibilty that the hood could have been changed at some point or etc..etc...find the original color of the truck, see what panels actually match up from overspray if you can find some and go from there.Without a build sheet matching the VIN and all stamped numbers on body, there is no proof positive way I am aware of to ID these trucks other than what you see and can determine to be original to the package.

Re: How to identify a Dodge Warlock? - 10/13/11 06:35 PM

ultimately, the warlock is only as valuable as you feel it is. available on any stepside as a package, why would a plain jane /6 be an awesome find, as a warlock? maybe a 400 or 440 would be hot, but really it depends how much you're willing to pay for some easily added, readily available pinstripes. the wood stakes are also readily available, as well as the plaques. buy it for what it is, not what it might be. that way, either way it goes, you're happy, right?

Plus I don't understand this absolute fascination with a Warlock truck!?! It's just an appearance package, and there were LOTS of them! Just because it's a Warlock doesn't magically make it "better".

They do look cool though...

LRT, Rod Hall, Macho's (and that sport package from the 60's that I can't recall the name of now) are far more "collectible", as far as appearance packages go...

Re: How to identify a Dodge Warlock? - 10/13/11 08:38 PM

No I understand. It's kind of like why is an H code Duster worth more than a regular slant Duster if the slant Duster has been replaced with all the same parts as the H code. In the end it's the exact same car that just has different numbers stamped on it. Yet it's worth a few thousand more. It's stupid when you think about it.

I just like keeping the vehicles original. So if I'm looking for a Warlock then I'd like to find one that originally had the Warlock package and bring it back to that. Doesn't really matter in the end whether you fix up a D100 or Warlock but its kind of nice to know that this is the way the trucks life began.

Oh and of course there are better packages or more valuable ones but you can't always afford those. I'd take a Midnight Express over any of them but I'd need to have a lot of money to burn.

Re: How to identify a Dodge Warlock? - 10/13/11 09:11 PM

Buildsheets aren't entirely unheard of.
chances are "unlikely". can always look in usual spots. never know luck might be with you.

if someone who is trying to clone one, almost always forgets the chrome side steps.

then again, i've seen more than my share of people who just because they have a stepside think it's automatically a warlock.

really color and specific options i mentioned earlier are really only identifiers.

then there is 78-9 where color palette grows and 79 bucket seat was not automatic.
they really do get tricky w/o docs.

Re: How to identify a Dodge Warlock? - 10/13/11 11:02 PM

I have a complete code book for 76-79 Warlock trucks which states: For 76/77&78 the body package Warlock code will be shown as GK9601. The 79 Warlock II codes are GK9724 & GK9725 2WD and GK9726 4WD. A basic Warlock includes the following initial options: D100 (2WD) with 115" wheel base, oak wood utiline (stepside) body bed rails, chrome plated bed steps and painted road wheels (usually gold), 15x7" front and rear H70x15 raised white letter tires, convenience package required, power front disc brakes frt / drum rear, frt anti-sway bar. special gold accent tape, special tailgate decals (79/79), 5000 GVW pkg, oil pressure gauge, 15" steering Tuff wheel (1976/77/78) and early 79), 15" steering wheel SPORT (1979). The basic code that is shown on the equipment code sheet is usually located under the hood. Now there are the black bucket seats with the center buddy seat code KB5. Paint codes for 1976 to 1979 are : J3 7858-Citron Red, 3450 Med Canyon Red, R7 3441. Canyon Red Sunfire Metallic, SG8 7883 Teal Green Sunfire Metallic, SL3 5233 Sunburst Orange, 3435 Sable Brown Sinfire Metallic, X9/TX9 4004 Black/Formal Black, PX8/PY 4009 Sunfire Black Metallic. The 76/77 Warlock tail gate will only have a 'Dodge' decal in Hemi Font, the 78 will have 'Warlock by Dodge' on the tail gate and the 79 will have Warlock II on the tail gate. There are many other option codes depending on how many accessories each truck was made with. Hopefully this will help you determine if you have the real deal. But remember this. The Warlcok is essentially just a trim package so any one could make a D100 (2WD)or a W100 (4WD) into a Warlock by installing the necessary stripes, paint, wheels. and interior. I am restoring a 77 Warlock (pic attached before restoration) and it's a good looking truck no matter if it came from the dealership or it was made by an individual. Good luck. mikeymopar68@aol.com

Re: How to identify a Dodge Warlock? - 10/14/11 04:28 AM

We have found a broadcast sheet in the top of the drivers upper control arm! It was a 25K original mile 79 Lil Red, couldn't believe it was still there and we were able to steam it a little and it unfolded just fine and we were able to read the codes! I have had several Warlocks and they were available with any engine EXCEPT the E58 360 4-bbl, they were reserved for the Lil Red.

Re: How to identify a Dodge Warlock? - 10/14/11 02:16 PM

-all have code RU9- on equipment label for "Special wheel" code

-2 oranges avail sunrise and sunburst.

-76-77 equipment label/invoice states YE0- bucket seat package and KT1- black trim set. 78-9's have KB5- bucket seat and console

Sure it does...even the name says so.
They wouldn't be even half as cool if they were named the Dodge "Leprechaun" now would they?
Marketing is half the battle.

Excellent information guys. I'm going to save all these codes and package descriptions so I have a good amount of information in case the truck is missing its documentation.

is this the one your talking about? This was;

The Dodge Dude pickup truck came with factory options such as the powerful Mopar 383 V8, Bucket Seats, a long sweeping body line that ran all the way from the hood to the tailgate. And of course, the signature giant "C" stripe that followed the body line all the way down the side, (simular to the legendary Dodge Superbee), except instead of that classic bumble bee you had - "The Dude."

Re: How to identify a Dodge Warlock? - 04/23/12 11:32 PM

The Sweptline that everyone wants is the Sports Package with the 426 Wedge.

To answer a year-old post, the difference from an H-code Duster is that the Duster DOES have more than an appearance package and it was originally a neat and hot car, so if one restores it it will be in fact a real one, not a clone or a look-alike. In the world of collectors it makes all the difference, and as long as there is someone out there willing to pay a lot more for a restored H-code Duster than a re-engined slant six Duster, it will mean something.
And I'm sorry, local dude, but a 318 powered 1974 Road Runner is not a muscle car, even though it carries the name.

I had a 79 4x4 warlock II. The V I N started W13JF9S, and I don't believe any of those characters designated it as a warlock.
