Re: Dakota spindles on 73 clubcab done (almost) [Re: scratchnfotraction]
#5964810 - Wed May 05 2010 12:12 AM Edit Reply Quote Quick Reply

Okay, I have been loving and studying this thread like crazy. I have an 83 2wd Ramcharger that is getting a set of 91-96 dropped spindles. I put new energy suspension urethane bushings in the upper control arm and cant get them to go back on. I squeezed everything together with my vice. Is that not enough? Do I need to use a press? What's the trick, if any? I am doing the spindles and some cut 3/4 ton coils

Im guessing it has 225s or 235s on it. Makes me wish I hadnt gotten rid of my 92 2wd that is now a 4wd duelly deisel

Re: Pics of your lowered 72-93 Dodge trucks - 05/08/10 06:16 AM

Thanks. I did the Dakota spindles and 3/4 ton coils with 2 1/2 coils cut out. In the rear its only got 2 leaves in it. I'm going to put one leaf back in and do some dropped shackles. Hopefully I will be driving it next week. In that pic it has 30 9.5 15's on it. I'm working on a deal for some 17's for it.

Just a question on the Dakota spindles . Are you guys using mother mopar stock or aftermarket 2" drop spindles .

They are using Aftermarket 2" Drop Dakota Spindles

any one ever tried tried western chassis dropped dakota spindles? they are $199.

Re: Pics of your lowered 72-93 Dodge trucks - 05/09/10 01:40 AM

Front is a pair of custom coils from Coil Spring Specialties. Same spring rate, wire size etc but 2" shorter.
Rear is a ton of modifications but I'm think it's pretty close to stock height.
3800lbs B body Superstock springs, relocated hangers and Firestone airbags to hold extra weight. If the bed is empty, I run the bags with no air pressure.

245 60 15's and 275 60 15 on 8" rim.

Re: Pics of your lowered 72-93 Dodge trucks - 05/09/10 11:00 PM

I'm just in the process of a total rebuild of my 78 Warlock . I realy like the look of the lower stance of the trucks on this thread.
Here is a pic of my truck in Feb 2010 . Have the cab & fenders on it now . I have 2" lower springs on it with 245 45 17 on the front & 285 40 17 on the back . She is still to high for me. So i'm going to lower it with the van lower control arms .
I would like to know what year of Dakota 2" spindles i would need to order . Correct me if i'm wrong . I believe an older post said 87 to 90 spindles for the 72 to 78 trucks .
what is the best kind to buy?

I just lowered the rear on my 92 D150 last week. I used to have it sitting high for towing but in the last year I`ve taken out the air shocks and add a leafs and added B Body Ranchos and traction bars because I race it occasionally. I just added longer shackles and it lowered the rear 1 1/2 to 2 inches. Now the truck sits level and looks better, its not actually lowered but its level.

Posted By: dodge turbo

Re: Pics of your lowered 72-93 Dodge trucks - 05/18/10 08:13 PM

i flipped the front spring spring hangers
Posted By: scratchnfotraction

Re: Pics of your lowered 72-93 Dodge trucks - 05/18/10 08:16 PM

not sure how he did it but I used a front hanger to replace the rear hanger and flip the shackle

it will lower it or lift it depending on the axle placement..lower a 2x..lift a 4x4

axle under spring is a 4-5 inch lift

axle over spring is a 4-5 inch drop

gives a very good stance and ride, very cheap and all mopar parts

i floped an A-body 8 3/4 in to run 12" rims and 29x15x15 M/Ts tucked in the fenders

lots of nice truck here

Re: Pics of your lowered 72-93 Dodge trucks - 05/18/10 11:27 PM

i started to take the shackles off of my truck today. what a PITA! once i got the nuts off the bottom bolts are so stuck to the brackets. i tried hammering them out but i was mushrooming the bolts. i dont know what to do. i tried everything, i dont know how im going to get the shackles off. anyone have any tips? also, the front brackets, the bolt that holds the leaf is inbetween the bracket and the frame. how do i get the leaf off of the bracket? sorry i dont want to hijack this thread, maybe i will start another one.
Posted By: scratchnfotraction

Re: Pics of your lowered 72-93 Dodge trucks - 05/18/10 11:50 PM

helps to have the rear axle un bolted and the leaf spring un-loaded

I use a pointed drift chisle and knock them out and try not to shroom them out

they do take some when rusted and stuck

on the front the bolt knocks to the inside and there is another hole in the frame brace that lets it pass thru

the side with the gas tank is a PITA unless the tank is droped or the bed removed

if your removeing the brackets from the frame smoke wrench the rivits off and pry the bracket off..while its still hot knock the rest of the rivits out of the frame

if you use the front bracket on the rear use the top forward hole and drill the other 3 and bolt the bracket on as it captures the shackle bolt

the shackle needs to be bolted to the spring and the bracket and bolted to frame at the same time

want any pics of it as it goes together let me know

yes start another post so we dont hijack this one

Lots of awesome trucks. Now a question for you. For the guys with WIDE rear tires. WITHOUT tubbing it, and with a stock rear axle what is the widest rim (and backspacing) and tires you can fit?? I am considering tubbing my truck to add some fatties out back, but dont know if im going to go generic tubs from summit, or try to extend the factory wells. Thanks!!

Ok, Mine is the yellow one just above this post

It is NOW just primer grey it used to be yellow

I'm thinking about going back with this paint
scheme just in yellow and black instead of white and black

This is NOT my truck, and my hood will not be black

but other than that will be same, just yellow with a black stripe

Although the white is starting to grow on me

i'd say 275 60 15 would fit and probably 295's with the right off set rim and of coarse it really would depend on how low your truck is but jfyi I have some 15x10 with 275 60 15 the ofset was good for my stepside but when I tried to put them on my 80 after I lowered it they wouldn't fit they stuck out too far on the standard bed

now primer grey until next paint job

I used a 1" spacer that changed the bolt pattern from 5x4.5 to 5x5.5. Spacer sets them out just enuff that the rears dont rub. No turning issues either.

Re: Pics of your lowered 72-93 Dodge trucks - 10/01/10 10:23 PM

Updated pic of mine from page one

-put the rear on top of the springs and put the stock shackles on the back and returned the front spring hangers to stock. Also added Caltrac bars. Rancho adjustable in back

-Front van lower control arms. New MOOG springs with one coil removed

-Rear center of wheel well is 27" from the ground
-Front is 25" from the ground

Rear tires are Hoosier radial slicks 30x9
Front tires are Cooper 215/75/15 (28 inch tall)

I had to but the bump stop mounts off the front because the where sitting on the strut rods. the ride height stayed the same after if cut them.

I have about 3inchs of clearance in rear from the rear to the frame. i had my father (230lbs) and brother (220) stand in the back and jump up and down and never came close to hitting.

This is the only pic i have from my cellphone..im using my crapy laptop so i wont have any good ones any time soon

This is taken the day I finished my first stage of lowering. It was done by cutting one wrap off the coils, and taking all but two leafs and the bottom leaf off. It dropped around 3" in front and 4" out back. Next step is spindles and spring under and eventually 18's with front and rear sways. Hoping to eventually try it out on an autocross course for shites and giggles, mainly to mess with the "tuner" guys, lol....

Here is my '85 short wide. '86 core support and grille BTW. Front has 1 coil cut on the springs and for now roller 235/75/15 tires. I eventually want shorter ones. The rear is flipped and is an 8 3/4 with a 3.91 open carrier. Tires on that are 275/60/15s on rare 15x8 steels.

For the front when I convert the bolt pattern I am going to run 15x7 steels. with likely 225/70/15 tires. All 4 will be black with redline dog dishes.

which wheels and tires will look best

make it one color instead of two-tone

find a ramcharger bumper for rear to get rid of that big step bumper

I boxed the rear frame rails and mounted the stock spring hangers on the inside of the frame. Stock left side would go on the boxed right inside and vice versa. I also C notched it, since I used 3" lowering blocks. I never had a problem with the blocks, but if I were to do it all over again, I would just raise the leaf spring mounts 2-3" to eliminate such a big block.
I'll see if I got a pic of that, all my old pics are in paper form. It's so much easier now a days! HA

Question: are those stock 15x7 police wheels? I have several 15x7's but was wondering about getting a set of 15x8s for the rear from Wheel Vintiques but if the ones pictured are 15x7s I'll go with the ones I have. What rear tires are those?

Question: are those stock 15x7 police wheels? I have several 15x7's but was wondering about getting a set of 15x8s for the rear from Wheel Vintiques but if the ones pictured are 15x7s I'll go with the ones I have. What rear tires are those?
Thanks,

Joel

Joel,

Now that you mentioned it? I think he did have his rear cop wheels widened. Will have to ask him the size tire he is running. Will get back to you on that.

Joel,

His rear cop wheels are widened to 8 inches. And he runs 285x70x15 tires.

Great job everyone beautiful trucks! But you guys talked me into it. I have a 78 d150 gonna get a c body 8 3/4 over ths springs so what else can I do to just really slam the wheels into the fenders. The fronts have to be able to then decent at the strip but other than that i'm not worried about clearances since it will not be hitting the oh [Edited by Moparts - Family Friendly Site - Keep it clean] bumps. I'm running 275/60/15s in the rear right now and 235/60/15s up front eventually goin smaller in the front and bigger in the rear. I haven't found the posts about lowering the front yet and what's required to do it. any suggestions help just don't wanna spend an arm and leg right now.

Search KevinI's post also Rumblebee theres more just cant think of them.

You can get Dakota lowering spindles or van lower control arms or shorter front coils or cut your coils. Also pair a couple together ang get lower.
Heres a pic with cut coils

Just put a 8-3/4 3:91 posh in on top of the springs. Still have to do the front. Think I'm gonna just cut the coils and see how it looks.

Hope I can get the same look as some of y'alls trucks!!!

What have you done to your suspension to hook up and run 8.5s?

Its ladder bars/coil overs and large sticky rear tires along with some gear. Its actully run 8.43 in the 1/8th so far. More convertor would really help a bunch.

Its a 4.56 gear, and the stall is claimed to be 3k, but is not even close. In their defense it is the heavy 3k lockup style convertor. A non-lockup would be much better, somthing in a 10" 3800ish...Would probably net 8.0's...

I highly recommend van lower control arms and/or Dakota drop spindles. The ride quality is reduced when cutting coils.

Yes, Comes with the tank. The gauge worked in my 75 truck but didnt read correctly. But think it was my gauge in the dash. Cause it read the same way before i put the mustang tank in. Ordered one of the tanks the other day and was $127.00 to my door. Not sure if i got a discount or not? Shows $134 on their website. https://www.kentuckymustang.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=5297

Posted By: Cheeto

Re: Pics of your lowered 72-93 Dodge trucks - 01/08/14 09:25 PM

Current (most pics) 255/45-18. If you can find my old-old-old (pre-paint) pics from Ramcharger Central it had 245/45-17 with Mustang wheels back then.
Posted By: 76dodgeboy

Re: Pics of your lowered 72-93 Dodge trucks - 01/09/14 12:57 AM

I think 245/45s are a bit short But Im not there yet. manna Locate a couple used ones for mock up but Im pretty set on being 27-28" tall with the tire. 245/45s are 26". I've mounted them in a v6 mustang before. I plan to sit close to the truck in the pic. No its not bagged in the pic. Its static. He has 20" Ram steelies

But seemed to have had waaayyyyy more fun racing and cruising it around on the street. So hoping to get this 1979 truck built by march. Racing season starts then. Not much left to do. LOL

Finally got to do a little work om my 79 step-side street/strip project. Sat engine and trans down in it today. And to my amazement TTI 2" A-body under chassis headers fit like a glove. Pass required no work at all. Driver side i moved the Proportioning Valve and ground out a small area on the top of the frame rail for #7 header tube to clear.

Lowered the rear end on this one for a friend a few months ago. Just put rear end on top of the leaf springs. Also added a leaf for extra clearance between the frame and axle tube. He didnt want the front any lower at the time.

RED79, that is a beautiful truck, from ALL angles!!! Well done, sir!

Do you have a build thread on it somewhere? I really love how you did the cab. The dash and instrument panel are great, and I like your console setup on the tranny hump. This is something I have been thinking of for my '76 Ramcharger. Was your dash board and glove box in that good a shape, or did you dye or paint it?

Thank you,

Joe Cruse

Sorry, I don't have any pic of the truck as I was building it. I bought this truck new in 79 and used it as my driver for about 100,000 mi. before starting to make the changes. The original interior color was brown, so I stripped it out and painted all the metal areas. The plastic interior parts are recolored with PPG plastic paint. The gauge panel is made from .070 aluminum and a lot more tedious filing and fitting than I care to remember Same thing for the console only times TWO Thanks everyone for the kind words, it makes it all worth it.

It's an aftermarket seat from a company called FlexSteel. They are still in business but I don't think they make the vehicle products any more (seat is probably 18 years old). I had the seat re-upholstered, it was originally a gray velour material and is now tweed. Couple years later I made the upper and lower door panel accents from the same tweed.

Yes, it was featured in Mopar Muscle about 13 or 14 years ago. Not too much has changed on the outside. I made some major changes to the interior and completely re-wired the truck to eliminate the factory spaghetti wiring under the hood.

I thought that might be the case with a lower center of gravity.

It's probably a stretch but perhaps these bricks' aerodynamics are improved with lowering.

Re: Pics of your lowered 72-93 Dodge trucks - 09/04/14 04:15 AM

I attribute part of my huge increase in MPG when I did the Magnum/518 OD swap to my CrewCab to the lowering
I did to it while I had it apart which was almost 3" (2 coils cut) & just over 4 1/2" (spring hangers moved up on the frame)

The wind doesn't affect it as much as before for sure, even after adding 40 MPH to its top speed

Lee, my experience with the RamCharger was doing an axle flip & van LCAs with stock springs & it needed Dak spindles to level out or the rear spring hanger moved down roughly 2" The drop was 5 1/2-6"
I left the front hangers alone

I thought I would pop into Moparts. I've been away from cars and forums for a while. A lack of hobby funds takes the wind out of your sails for sure. I'm researching a plan for the new drivetrain. I'm looking at building up a 400 based stroker.

Re: Pics of your lowered 72-93 Dodge trucks - 02/10/15 08:51 PM

I was looking at that for a while and talked to muscle motors about it. The 451 (400 block with a 440 crank) makes good power and is cheapest to build, assuming you have good used parts. The 472 (or something close to that) was the best bang for the buck. The 500 needs a lot of mods and external oiling, but is a beast. I've dealt with MM a few times and found them both helpful and experienced. Good luck, keep us up on it. Wish you were closer to WV I could get you started with my abandoned parts stash.

Here is pics of mine. I bought it already lowered and done a lot of work under the hood. Its got a Diplomat police car 318 with a cam, headers 3" exhaust, edelbrock intake, and carter carb, 4.10 limited slip, 295/50s out back 205/60s up front. The rear has two leafs pulled with giant homemade shackles and the bed support notched out to clear them, up front the spings have been heated witch im not to crazy about. But the ride aint to bad and there is no real camber issues.

I'm also guessing you drilled new holes after the pics to put two more bolts in the bracket?

Looks like the best way I've seen so far to lower the rear...

I forgot I had done that on my tubbed 78, it made it real easy to lower the rear and no money out of pocket. up

I've mounted them in a v6 mustang before. I plan to sit close to the truck in the pic. No its not bagged in the pic. Its static. He has 20" Ram steelies

How did he get it that low static? This is the look in going for. Iv already got Dakota drop spindles. Debating on van Lcas. But besides ride quality vs spring cut is there any other benefit? It "looks" like the van Lcas still change camber and steering linkage angles the same as cut springs (with the same drop). Unless I'm wrong.

I want the engine cross member 1.5 or 2 inches from the ground. Or at least to tuck a 15 inch wheel to the fender lip. Or more. Which ever could come first? The back will be the easy part so any insight would be appreciated. Iv been scouring the Internet for info... Not much to go on... And it seems as if everyone is either pro street or only looking to go a few inches and maintain ride quality. Truck is just a weekend hot rod. I want it on the ground. Static.

Hey all, I'm new here. I didn't see an introduction page so I'm jumping right in. I don't have a pic of my truck lowered but I want to lower it. I found a pic of a truck on Google and it lead me here. The pic was put in by "rickstershemi" I'm curious about the front spring perch flip. Any info you can give me is greatly appreciated. I have been looking for a way to lower the back end of my truck for about a year and haven't found a cheap way to do it yet. Thanks again.

Bringing this one back to quickly ask whether or not it is necessary to install van tie rod adjusting sleeves when you swap the van LCAs in?
Thanks in advance

I don't think you need that part from a van, but have you checked to see if it has the same part number/interchange?
