Broke a ball joint

Broke a ball joint - 06/20/22 02:14 AM

Replaced the steering assembly years ago on my 06 2500 to the newer t style. This evening while hauling hay the passenger side ball joint let loose. It’s been so long since I did the work I can’t remember if the ball joints are replaceable or do I have to replace the whole tie rod?

Crazy where it broke, may have been a hairline crack from the factory. Hopefully you where not going fast when it snapped.

the whole tie rod is replaced as an assembly.
screw the old one off, counting the number of turns, screw the new one on the same number, and you will be good to go.
however, you should check the toe in to make sure it's in spec.
alignment shop, or there are several methods you can do at home. i'm sure the u-tube can show you how to do it.

That one could be fun to get the broken stud out of! You have to remove the nut and push the stud out of the tapered hole from the threaded end.
Then as stated, you remove the tie rod end from the threaded sleeve, count the number of turns out, and thread the new one in the same number of turns, but don't forget to put the lock nut on first, if it fits on the tie rod end.

i would remove the broken stud by using a sturdy "pitman arm puller" type of tool.
provided it can be fitted, crank it up tight on the stud, apply some heat, then a sharp wack of a hammer.
repeat as necessary.
i have only had to do this a few times over the almost 60 years playing with our "toys".
a couple of these came loose surprisingly easy, while a few were real "fun".
the one thing you don't have to worry about is boogering up the threads. biggrin
OP, you can do this. it's really not as hard as it seems.
please let us know how you make out.

Parts show up today. It’ll be this evening before I touch it.

Just replaced the whole assembly. I measured center to enter on the ball joints for length, I’ll still have it aligned. For the broke stud I just loosened the nut and 3 lbs hammered it. I’ll post pics of the stud later as the metal at the shear looked odd to me.

Your break looks like a twist type shear. I suspect the joint had seized into the ball socket. The strain of steering it was twisting it causing it to shear.
