2014 Ram ecodiesel. P203E fault. maybe time to trade it. - 11/13/21 07:38 PM

My 2014 Ram ecodiesel has a P203E fault. From what I have been reading I need to replace the DEF tank. Going to take it down Monday and see if it is covered. Bought truck new, now has 60k miles. I had the emission update done a couple years back. I bought it to originally pull my boat and single car trailer around. Boat is gone probably pull my trailer a few miles a year. Use the bed of the truck a lot, Live on a small farm, feed, etc. Engine has been good so far, knock on wood, EGR update done. Since I now use it just to haul stuff around town or travel to visit family no trailer. I am honestly thinking on trading it and going back to gas. Looking at maybe a new Rebel with hemi. What are your thoughts. .

Depends on how much it costs to fix it. Our 2019 5.7 gets around 14-15 mpg around town. 18-20 on the highway. Don't know what your diesel gets but it might be something to consider as well as the cost of a new truck.

Some emissions related stuff is warrantied up to 80k due to federal law. No idea if the tank would qualify but it is worth asking.

I googled the P203E fault code for s&g and it seems there are only a few causes:

Reductant level sensor defective
Wrong fluid in DEF storage tank
Broken wire or harness causing intermittent electrical connections
Electrical short

I'm guessing a new level sensor and you're on your way. But that's just a guess.

Just tore into a 3900 mile Eco that’ll need the entire fuel system replaced due to the high psi pump eating itself….. parts are 60+ days out laugh2

friend of mine ships trucks from Canada to the US. Hundreds of trucks. ford chevy dodge as well as some exotics. he buys gassers and diesels. he says the ONLY domestic truck he will not buy is a eco diesel. says something about how bad they are.

Seems to me it sounds like your looking for permission to buy a new truck...if so go ahead. Based on your post I see it as a known vehicle that you are happy with mechanically (dose what you ask of it) and seems to have been reasonably trouble free thus far. A new vehicle come with new payments (presumably) and a yet to be established repair history.
But I will say, my newest car is a 2005 followed by a 2001. (See sig) so my opinion may vary from the norm.

Own a 2021 Rebel (factory order) with ecod. Approaching 8mos and 10K mi of trouble free, amazing MPG performance. On the drive home from the dealer, 1250mi, averaged 28.7mpg. One, and only, gas stop at 850 mi on odometer (33 gal tank). Averages 25+ MPG mostly rural driviing. Jury is still out on 3rd gen ecod reliability. 1st and 2nd gens did have their share of problems. Part of the equation is driving scenario. Those doing a lot of city, stop and go, idling might be better served with gas engine. Longer distance, less stop and go, hauling, might be better served by a diesel.

Does look like a bear to work on. Engine is fairly recessed in engine bay on the 1500s, difficult access. Oil change on 3rd gen ecod 1500 is PIA as oil drain is just above crossmember, so installed a Fumoto valve to route oil away from the crossmember. Electronics in these new trucks is formidable and I'm a retired EE, but I do love the HUD and adaptive cruise.

I would like to rent one of those new ECOD Rams for a trip.

Does any rental company have them in their fleet,
or do any Dodge dealerships have one as a loaner?

No dealer in their right mind would have one for a loaner…. Initial cost, maint and depreciation kills that.

Look on TURO, see if anyone has one to rent.

Tried Turo.com

Turo displayed Ram trucks and listed 1500/2500 description only, no engine info.
Going daily rate seem to be in $70 to $79 range

I was interested in doing a Turo search because a family member told me they intended to use Turo on an “Round the World trip” starting Jan the 19th.
