98 ram throttle position sensor question

Just started having this issue with my Ram where I'll be cruising at highway speed, lean on the gas just a bit to maintain speed on a hill and it will momentarily rev up like it kicked out of overdrive, then immediately back down, and will keep doing this till I ease off of the gas. My first thought was just that, that something was wrong with the overdrive or maybe a solenoid. Mentioned it to a mechanic buddy and he suggested that it could be the TPS, does this sound right to you guys? Or any other ideas?

Thats a known bad TPS condition. My Dakota would flare randomly just like that.

Like almost any part on anything these days, expect to change the "new" parts out about every 2-3 years. If the parts make it to 5 years, you had really good parts.

First off any codes? Lost of other items can cause erratic operations. Such as running to cold or temp sensor issues. If no codes I would drive it and monitor the sensors with a scan tool. If there is codes fix them and go from there.

Going to check for codes either today or tomorrow, however, as you may have seen in another post of mine I'd been having an issue with it building nearly zero heat, had a stuck open t stat, it's now fixed and has good heat again but havent been out with the truck yet, but that's interesting, didnt realize that could affect things in that way. I'll update when I know something for sure. Thanks for the info!

Most likely a bad TPS they wear out in the most used position idle or hiway speed you normally run at. Rare that they would set a code as the PCM just thinks you push hard on the pedal. Sometimes with scanner reading TPS degrees you can slightly tap it and watch it go erratic.

Ok, well it appears it may well have been the fact that it wasnt building heat that was causing this issue cuz I took it out on the road for a while today and now that t stat is changed it ran fine, no problems at all so we'll see how it goes. Thanks for the ideas and input guys. I'll post again if I end up needing to do something else.
