What drop-hitch receiver? 2500 RAM - 08/09/21 05:25 PM

I'm looking for suggestions on brand and amount of drop needed for a 2500 Ram 4X4.
A friend suggested a 6" drop, but that doesn't seem like enough.
Pulling a car trailer.

Couple of variables come to mind- oversize tires, lift, etc. Easiest thing to do would be to level your car trailer and back your truck up to the coupler. Measure from the coupler up to the receiver.

Trying to decide that myself for my ‘21.
JB Reviews on YouTube did an excellent road test recently on a 2020 6.4L 2500 pulling his car trailer and if you look at about the 2:00 point you see the hitch he’s using isn’t set very low at all.

On my 2015 Power Wagon I run maybe a 4 inch drop. That truck sits higher than most esp wit the 33 inch tires.

With my '90 W350 I needed an 8" drop to have my trailer level in transport.

With the same trailer and my 2004 1/2 ton I needed a 2" drop.

So as mentioned above, back the truck up with your trailer level to see what you need.

Sorry I forget how to make this a link- but my boss had something like this on his 2020 f250. Its not only adjustable with 2 different ball sizes, its reversible. So just about any combination you can throw at it, it will handle.

*MOST* trailers are set up for an 18" ball height. That's to the TOP of the ball. Measure to the top of your receiver and do the math.

Check the weight rating on whatever you get too. A lot of the 2 5/8 ball mounts aren't rated for more then 5-6,000lbs.
I've always been leary of the adjustable ones. Some of them I wouldn't trust pulling much more then an empty trailer with.

Understandable, but he's pulled a toy hauler numerous times with ZERO concern, along with loaded job trailers and a 16' car trailer with 3 385 gallon totes filled. And a 12,900 lb project.

What about factoring in the drop of the rear end when you add tongue weight? I like at least 500 lbs tongue weight so it tracks nicely so I let the rear squat maybe 2 inches. I run a solid cast iron hitch with at least a 10k 2-5/8s ball, its only a 4" drop and works just fine keeping my trailer fairly level. If you run a 6" drop, then add plenty of tongue weight I'll bet you the front of trailer will be lower than desired.

If you are considering/already have a weight distribution hitch system, my setup might be relevant. I have a newer (‘20) 2500 and use an “Equalizer” hitch system pulling a 24’ enclosed. That required me to get a 9” drop shank so that my trailer would be within 1” level ft to back. It also redistributes weight from the back of the truck to the front tires depending on the adjustment dialed into it, as well as reducing sway. I believe the standard drop shank with the kit was a 6”, so i had to get another one at 9” drop for my trailer design. Not sure if that helps you any.

I've got an '08 2500, Mega, 4x4.
As others have said, get a load equalizer hitch. The ball mount they come shipped with only allows about a 2" drop. I talked the vendor in to swapping it for one with a range of adjustments that will allow more than a 6" drop. Buying this piece later is very expensive and pricy to ship, so get it with the hitch purchase.
My hitch is currently set for 5" drop but I'm sure with one of my other trailers I'll probably need to go down another inch or so. You really want any multiple axle trailer as level as possible.Less chance of overloading tires and bearings, and probably more equal braking too.
