99 Durango 4x4 5.9 to 01 Durango 4x4 4.7 Swap

99 Durango 4x4 5.9 to 01 Durango 4x4 4.7 Swap - 09/11/20 05:55 PM

I have a minty 01 Durango 4x4 with a BHG 4.7 and a wrecked 99 4x4 with a perfectly good 5.9 drivetrain. What would it take to put the 5.9 in the 4.7 truck? Would the 5.9 trans and tc have to swap too? Driveshafts? Obviously, the ECM under the hood, what about the ECMs inside the cabin?

BCM in the cabin are different, trans is different, differentials are different, computer, harness, steering (the 99 don't got rack and pinion...)

Differentials are different? HOW???? I have an 01 with the 360 and it has teh same diffs as a 4.7 equipped one would. there was a before/after pertaining to the front housing but it was not engine dependent.
I passed on several nice Durango's because they had 4.7s in them, I held out for 318 or 360, I got a 360 one. still have 7 years later. coming up on 270K miles, I did swap engine and rebuild the trans at 258K not bad on teh originals..... I still have the original engine, it really dont look too bad. plans are to rebuild that engine for something else.

I recently looked at a nice 01 w/a 4.7, and wondered myself, what it would take to swap in a 360/ besides mounts, trans, wiring and computer.... the T case in mine came from a 4.7 equipped Durango. went RIGHT in. same spline, same bolt pattern. driveshafts matched up. as far as I am concerned the 4.7 was JUNK. (just my opinion)

Yeah the 4.7 was a good motor, but prone to blown head gaskets, like mine. Overheat once and the hg's are done.

What I think you missed on my original post was I have a 01 and a 99. The 99 and 01 have different diffs... it's not engine specific, but year specific. That's what Dave was referring to. When looking for a front DS for my 02 R/T, I noticed the diffs were different between years too.

I actually have 4 Durangos. My daily is a 02 R/T with 200k on it. I have two 01s, both 4.7...one with the bhg and the other is a engine donor for the other one. The last one is a 99 with a 5.9. I've already pulled the good 4.7 out of the donor, but before dropping it in the other truck I started tickling the idea of doing a 5.9 swap. I knew it wouldn't be a straight swap, but after what Dave said, I'll stick with the straight 4.7 swap and not overheat it. Idk if it's common everywhere, but the plastic Ys used on the heater hoses cracks and leaks out here in AZ. I've had it happen to 3 Durangos. That's what happened to my 4.7 one and my niece cooked it to the point of the motor shutting down. I won't let that happen again, so the donor 4.7 should last a while.

Thanks again.

On my wife's Dakota, the 4.7 had the metal heater hoses/pipes that run from the pump, across the intake and then to the drivers side of the firewall. It's an 04. I bought the truck with a locked up motor, and one of the metal pipes split and cooked the engine. I just bought 5/8 heater hose, and ran from the pump to the firewall. I made to brackets on top of the motor to tie wrap the hoses to, and it works great. I bought a remanned 4.7 from Powertrain Engines, and got a 7 year no fault warranty with it. Very pleased so far. My original plan when I bought it was to swap in a low mile 5.3 LS motor, and a 6L90E. State DMV guy said it would fail the smog test simply because the computer at the inspection station would see the GM ECM in a Dodge...and kick it out!
