400 to 440 swap into 78 D100 questions. - 06/08/20 09:51 PM

Edit, Added pic for all of us truck lovers.
Need some info from the Truck experts... A few big block truck questions.
Swapping a 440 into 1978 D100 that came factory with 400 engine,

1. Will the same power brake booster still work with the RB block and still clear the valve covers? ?

2. If not? What part number booster will work?

3.Does anyone have a part number or source for a replacement oil pick up tube for the rear sump bb oil pan?
I haven't had any luck finding a listing or part number for a replacement through part stores or Melling.

Any help much appreciated. 👍👍

Thanks in advance.

On the booster your best solution is to get a booster for the 440 specific half tons which is the same as the regular 3/4 ton chassis, its smaller in diameter to help clear the valve cover. If you keep the bigger diameter pancake booster you generally have to make a pretty good dent in the valve cover for it to clear the booster and then taking the valve cover on and off can be a challenge and if you want to go to a taller valve cover it won't even be an option with the pancake booster.

440 will fit with the large booster. I didn't have to dent the valve cover.
Don't think anyone makes the pickup tube so be placing want ads for a good used one.

I believe there are some valve covers that will not clear the booster. If they do you will most likely have to remove the booster to take off the valve cover. Milodon has the pan and pickup tube. You said the truck was a 400 if so all those items will fit the 440.

Even with the smaller booster (75 D200 with 440), I had to loosen the throttle/kickdown bracket on the intake to get the valve cover off.

Pretty sure the tall 76-78 valve covers won't fit.

I had one of the smaller diameter boosters sitting around with some old truck stuff for a few years. Not sure if I still have it or if I tossed it. I had a '77 with a 440 in it for a few years so I collected some of those parts. I converted mine over to the one ton front suspension and installed new wiring harnesses and all of that stuff when I rebuilt the engine. You can make the oil tube pretty easily. The lower fitting is just a flare fitting so you can use a length of brake line. Just bend it so it fits and then cut it to length for the dipstick.

Think he needs a pickup tube, not a dipstick tube.

Thanks for all the replies. This truck came with a 400. So knowing this booster will work with the shorter valve cover is a big help. Will pull booster and lay it out of the way when I install the 440. And i found a good used oil pick up tube. Thanks again guys! 👍👍
