Got a new one. Its weird..... - 03/30/20 04:30 PM

Got this one on Saturday. 64 d100 former California forestry truck. Poly motor, dash shifted 727 and dana 60. Also has 8 lug wheels, heavy duty suspension and a factory spot light. I am digging this one. Gonna be fun.

Thanks guys! I'm having a blast tearing it apart. Needs front floor pans but is otherwise solid. I hope to be cruising around this summer.

dodge delivered short wheel base 3/4 ton trucks to the government in the 60,s there is even a forum for them-------probably the first rock crawlers....this is the first 2WD one i have seen....

Phone and power companies got D100 2wd too. They ordered them with D200 axles so easy interchange of on shelf parts.

But I had a OD Green US Army Maintenance bin 67 D200 with a \6 and 4 speed. It had 17's on it. Its Dana had 4:36:1 gears. Same spotlight too. Had never been off Ft Lewis from day of delivery. When I retired in 1994 it had 32,000 miles on it. From the garage to the coffee shop to the job, to lunch, back to job and back to garage.

Sweptline.org

There is a lot on that SERT sticker. The D100s usually came with 5 lug axles, but this appears to be a special order and not common. The 61-68 W100s all came with 8 lug axles and a short bed.

Very cool! I had a 62 W200 crew cab short wide box slant 4-speed with 4.88's. You could pull anything with that except on the highway. I would love to find one like you have! up

I'm familiar with swept line.org. I thought he meant there was a forum for the 3/4 ton government trucks. Oh well, I'm registering at sweptline.org to learn a little more about this thing. Thanks guys.

When you said it was dash shifted I wondered if it was a 65. The 61-64 autos were technically dash shifted too, but it was a push button shifter to the left of the steering wheel. The early 65s switched to the lever on the dash to the right of the steering wheel.

Re: Got a new one. Its weird..... - 04/01/20 12:44 PM

Does yours by chance have extra steel welded onto the frame rails? I had a very similar 64 or 65, 25ish years ago, and it had 4.56 gears, poly 318, dash shifter, 8 lug wheels, and it had a short flatbed installed when I got it so not sure the original bed style.

But the frame rails had additional steel welded to the the underside to make the overall height of the frame taller/thicker. IIRC it was like a 3/4" or so flat strap the full length of each frame rail. Supposedly this was because it was a Forestry truck for the conditions in which it was intended to be used.

Yes, that is the case. bear with me, as I am still learning these 60's trucks. I guess the shifter is not unique in this case..

Why would he choose there? Maybe he’s homesick for the LaBrea tar pits?
