Leaking Power Steering Gear 73 W100 - 02/04/20 02:34 PM

The power steering gear on my 73 Power Wagon is leaking like crazy through pitman arm output shaft.

I see that pitman shaft seals are available. Should I go this route or look at getting a rebuilt steering gear?

That's your call. I would try seals first if it were me.

Pitman shaft seals are pretty easy to install. I would go with that first. Napa should have them. I may have a mopar one somewhere around here.

Ok I pulled the gear and bought a rebuild kit.

However when I pulled out the pitman shaft I’m not sure it’s going to be worth buttoning back up. The shaft is worn and has ridges on it. I’m thinking this is not going to seal?

Are these shafts available out there or should I just use the gear as a core and get a rebuilt one?

What’s farm account 31999?

Re: Leaking Power Steering Gear 73 W100 - 02/23/20 02:46 AM

it is an acct napa uses to give disccounts. most of time it is big discount. example: filter sale-napa filters are wix filters. on 31999, the filter will be approx 1/2 price. call a napa store tomorrow and ask for price on steering box with/without 31999.

Could you put a speedi sleeve on it? You might need to use something to push it on that far, but if you already bought a rebuild kit, it might be an option.

I don’t think any of the sleeves are wide enough. The shaft is 1.250 but the width for the two seals is roughly .625. The widest sleeve I can find is .313.

Ok.... got a remanufactured power steering gear from NAPA, got it installed and it’s reverse rotation to what I need. I ordered the one that NAPA shows for it (pic attached) but obviously something is wrong. Grrrrr.....they are closed now. Will have to wait until Monday.

Also...the current price is $20 less than I paid.

Looking at NAPA’s website again they show the same part number for D100 and W100.....grrr again, obviously not the case I should have checked myself.

Thanks!

I'll call this morning and check on that number.

They didn't know anything about that farm acct discount. They typed it in and nothing came in.

NAPA doesn't show availability on PS391038.

Rockauto shows an AC Delco reverse rotation but it's unavailable.

I have the core back and it's certainly reverse rotation, unfortunately I'm not showing any suppliers that show stock.

I need reverse rotation for the 4WD. I confirmed the rotation is indeed reversed on the original gear, turn the input shaft clockwise and pitman shaft turns counterclockwise.

Rock Auto shows a rebuild service of your gear box available.

How about Steer and Gear in Columbus? Never dealt with them myself.

Thanks all. Car-Id shows stock on the reverse rotation at a pretty good price. Ordered one...we'll see if it shows and it's correct. They are scarce out there.

Just to help confirm 1973 W100-200 is reverse rotation.
You will probably have to send yours in for rebuild.

Yep, found that out. The one on backorder is reverse rotation. The price is actually a little bit less for a rebuilt versus having mine rebuilt.
