70's Steering Wheels

70's Steering Wheels - 08/17/19 08:27 PM

I just picked up a green steering wheel for my '73 W200 crew, which has a green interior, but a black wheel. The new-to-me wheel is off a '76 and was a 2WD. It does not want to on the steering shaft. Was there a difference between the 2WD and 4WD steering columns that would not allow such a swap?? Neither steering wheel is keyed; neither is my steering column. I'd hate not to be able to use this, after looking for the last few years for a decent green wheel.

Thanks,

Joe

I've had issues where I'd pop the wheel off to do something and then couldn't get it back on - just too tight of a fit. If you're sure the spline count is right take a bit of sand paper wrapped around a bolt to the inside of the donor wheel. Just enough to knock the ridges down a little bit is all I've needed.

I'll give that a shot. Thanks!

I thought I read somewhere about the D and W truck columns being different as to spline count but I'm not sure. I do know on my 72 W200 I have to hold it perfectly straight to get that sucker to line up.
