Edge EZ programmer . . . 02 Cummins - 07/02/19 06:55 PM

Guys, anyone out there have experience with Edge programmer . . . my truck is still stock 02 Cummins HO, 6spd . . . just wondering if this will help the MPG and bit more power for towing ?? . . . do you have to worry about EGT with this unit ???

Nope: It's pretty much plug in and not worry about it. I put one in my 02 without any other mods and it made it way more enjoyable to drive. Mine was an automatic and it cut shifting around town on hills and such in half. Just more torque and less foot down on the pedal. If you plan on doing other mods it's probably not the right choice but if you just want it a little better it will work great. It was a long time ago so I can't remember if fuel mileage improved but I imagine it did.

There are better and more reliable programmers such as the Smarty. No matter what you decide get a Pyrometer gauge. Boost and fuel pressure are helpful along with a tranny temp gauge.

No experience with the EZ, but my 01 Cummins has the Attitude. I've upgraded my HY35 to the HX35 (which your should have already). I have a 4" exhaust and just stock injectors. I can keep the exhaust temps below 1200° pulling my 10,000lb trailer in the tow setting of course. My tow setting (level 2) is a 60hp bump, and I believe the EZ has a 65hp bump on level 3 (highest Level). So with the hp levels being similar, I think your temps would be OK if you have a larger exhaust. With stock exhaust, you may be pushing it. I would recommend getting a fuel pressure guage for your fuel pressure going to the injection pump. I could run my fuel pressure to 0 psi on the stock in tank fuel pump upgrade!?! Also a Pyro in the exhaust manifold is also recommended with upgrades... Just for piece of mind. Better safe than sorry.
Ah yes, better fuel image as well! I picked up 4 mpg with the programmer, exhaust, and a big caterpillar air filter!
Hope comparison helps with your question...

I ran an Edge EZ on my 99 truck back in the early 2000s. It was a nice upgrade, I had gauges on mine(Boost and EGT) and it would never get hot with just the EZ. My Truck was a QC SB and it ran like a 16.20 the one time I raced it with the EZ on it which I didn't think was bad and people thought that was fast for a diesel back then lol.

If I had another one of those trucks I would put an EZ and a set of 275HP injectors in and call it good. That would produce good safe reliable power with little to no smoke.

Thanks for the replies . . . my truck is all stock, Quad Cab, shortbox, 6spd manual. I have 73k miles on it now (I bought it new) . . . I have added fuel pressure gauge, changed to the FAST replacement lift pump and replaced the injector pump already . . . just did a 1600mile trip towing my travel trailer across the Canadian Rocky mountains . . .for most part I am pleased how it tows . . .just would be nice to have a bit more "oomph" on the hills, or if need to pass. . .

I had one on my 01 2wd. It was a basic mod for taking full advantage of the stock setup. No way to update. I used it mainly in the Mileage and Tow modes. I now have an 07 5.9 and running the same box. Again, I use the Milage/Tow modes. With 275000 miles it’s held up well. I’m now looking at some preventative things on the truck. New turbo, injectors etc.

The shop that will do the work recommends an upgraded Edge which is updateable. Edge will also give me some credit back on my old setup.

How much pressure does that lift pump put out?

My buddy had an EZ on his 98.5 and it worked really well. Pulling a 34 foot 5th wheel camper it would do 16-17 mpg Canadian and on I81 from Canada to Carlisle PA, lay waste to anything 6L Powerjoke or Durasmash that was new at the time and burn less fuel doing it.

I think it's perfect for your use. The only downside is you will be kicking yourself for not putting it in when new.

I think the FAST lift pump is similar to the stock lift pump, in regards to pressure . . .HOWEVER, the FAST unit is more robust and will last . . . my pressure gauge is 15psi on max side, and I have seen the needle pegged over 15psi . . . when I was pulling hard up the mountains (5th gear, 2100rpm, 55mph) towing the trailer, it was down to 11psi . . .

I run an edge comp, set it on level 5 and leave it there, towing and so on. It's night and day when it's turned off. I also have 100hp injectors, so it will roll coal if you lug it. I thought it ran great til I picked up a 6.7 cummins which makes the 01 feel slow now laugh2

If yours is an 02 I would get this one. Their Powermax stuff is awesome and you have full adjustability and control from the cab. Look at the torque and hp chart. You won't spend a better $900 in your life. Beware auto trans. users, you're gonna need an upgrade with this stuff turned up.

Level 5 is race on mine, not a good idea with a stock tranny. Lots of black smoke

I’ve had my edge ez/RV275 injectors on my 01 since 03. 181k on it now and no probs. Great towing power and no regrets. If you’re towing without gauges keep the rpms 2000 2200 on grades, but I’d still put a pyro and boost gauge on. My lift pump is still the stock style. Not sold on that 15psi BS.... I do monitor it with a mech gauge.
