72-up Big Block Truck Motor mounts - 04/08/19 12:20 AM
Anyone tell me what these are exactly for I know that 2 wheel drive is different than 4 wheel drive. I know they are 72-up for a few years. Anyone have any photos to show differences. Willing to learn the differences as there is not much info out there.... I can post more pics if needed. Thanks in advance!

I had a (factory) big block (2wd) '77 truck 25 yrs ago. It's been my understanding that when the brackets are shaped like yours, they're for 4 wheel drive. When they are straight like pictured below, they are for two wheel drive (this is what my truck had).

Thanks for the reply. Hopefully others will chime in and verify. Not only would I like to know exactly what they are but the differences for sure. Thanks again.

They do. Does the left side have a hole to clear the oil pump pressure spring nut?

No hole it's solid there...

They are cut in such an angle that misses the oil pump nut. Test fit them on a block with pump and see.
I just sold 2 sets of those.

This is just from memory, a long time ago I bought a set of brackets from a big block van, and it seems like they looked like that. I wound up buying the correct brackets new at the dealership. That should give an idea how long ago it was...
P.S. I was putting a 383 in a 2WD 73 Club Cab.

The engine came out of a 78 truck or ram charger it was in and running so should not be from a van.. Just trying to figure out whether 4 wheel drive or not. I am surprised people can identify for sure as I thought guys were messing with these old trucks...

In our area, any big block truck was pretty rare, we didn't have as many as some areas were blessed with.
When I was messing with big blocks in trucks, it was during my dirt track days (late 70s through about the mid 80s), what motor bracket came on what year truck was not of any concern of mine, my concern was that the brackets I had got the motor close enough I could make them work. It was easier to modify existing truck motor brackets to fit our need then it was to modify car brackets to work. Then we need to throw in the fact that there may have been 3 or 4 small block to big block swaps over that span of time.
Now we add in all those years since the mid to late 80s and you think I should trust my memory with any kind of certainty on these kind of things?
Good luck with that. Gene

I am trying to remember now. This was back in the 90's. My buddy bought a running/driving 76sh Dodge camper van with a 440. We pulled the engine from the van and dropped it right into his 83 D150 2WD pick up truck with headers. I don't remember needing or getting any different engine mount brackets. We had it going in the new truck the same day. I do remember grinding a radius in the driver side frame rail rather than ding the header tube. Man, did that truck fly...

I hope these are right, as I bought a set of those as well as ram horn manifolds and a water pump to put a big block in my '78.

Thanks! That is them and the engine was a 78 these came from. They are identical. I guess now the next question... Is your Ramcharger 4 wheel drive? Thanks again!

I used 76 4x4 mounts in my 78 d300......worked fine.
Didn't know there was a difference back then.

straight mounts are 2 wheel drive, other mounts with cutout for oilpump are for 4 wheel drive.

Partly correct.
72-4 4wd have a divorced transfer case and use the straight mounts.

Now a question for you guys. Will the 4x4 mounts fit on a 2wd? I'm pretty sure I have the 4x4 ones on my 2wd. I remember having a little trouble getting the engine dropped in.
