Nope. Warnock was basically a sticker package and could be had on any utiline any engine slant 6-440 and any trans. No records at that time.

Hmmmm... Reason I ask is I just got this '76 Warlock Power wagon factory 440 truck. Seems like it would be pretty rare.

Re: Dodge Warlock production numbers? - 03/29/19 03:46 PM

There is a member on here that claims some knowledge of some production numbers but he hasn't been around for a while and I don't recall the scope. I want to say it was from a connection at Chrysler and mostly limited to how much of each color. I'll just say that there are likely some numbers out there. I'd think at least how many Warlock option packages were produced in any year.

I think step side 4wd is fairly rare to start with, 440 even more so and with the Warlock package there can't be many ever built. Cool score to be sure and even looks like original wood bed rails. What kind of shape is it in??

Y]The 76 s are rare- produced in July of 1976 only- all black- though you might read otherwise is a couple books. Being a 4x4 is rarely seen, very few 440s seen Very rare truck. I owned a survivor for 15 years and sold in 2013,,,

Yes, it would be good to know some production numbers if they are available out there somewhere. And yes, the bed rails are original ones. I’ve actually had these myself that I bought at a swap meet over 20 years ago. I’ve kept them stored inside all these years hoping to find a Warlock to put them on. They are now back where they belong!

Nice find. As far as Warlocks go it doesn't matter how many were produced/dealer package, it's how many are left that are good original examples. That's the number. Unlike LRE's that were factory produced in less volume but seem to be more plentiful especially around this area. Sad thing is nobody gives a crap about either except the good people who frequent this sub-forum.

Very rare in your neck of the woods.
Nice looking truck. up
Nice to see some one getting use from something they have been sitting on for decades.
We all know wood doesn't usually last long.

Re: Dodge Warlock production numbers? - 04/04/19 01:40 AM

Awesome Warlock man!!! Having proof that it truly is one is a definite bonus! Very cool. 76 very rare, 4x4, rare, and with a factory 440 you have an extremely rare truck there. Everything I have ever found on them says Dodge kept no production records on them. Someone may know different. When I had my 77 I tried finding as much info as possible and not much out there. Lil Red's were a package truck identified in vin, Warlocks weren't, it was basically a sticker package, so nothing to identify them as Warlocks except build sheet, order sheet, or equipment label under hood. You see utilines advertised all the time as Warlocks but most aren't. Yours most definitely is and a rare one to boot!! Great score!!

Re: Dodge Warlock production numbers? - 04/04/19 12:53 PM

Several years ago I did a frame off build on a 76 True Spirit D100 factory 440 truck. The True Spirits were basically the brother of the Warlocks so in researching the True Spirit I came across some information that overlapped. When I sold the TS (it went overseas) I sent the books I had acquired with it so I don't have some of the original source material I used to research it. A lot of the information was sketchy and in some cases contradictory but for what it's worth this is what I still have in my notes.

In 1976 Dodge began the release of factory custom vehicles advertised as their Adult Toy Series. Initially the series consisted of custom vans but was soon expanded to include factory customized pickup trucks culminating with the Li’l Red Express Truck in 1978-9.

"....... two new trucks, the Warlock and the True Spirit had already been shipped to Dodge dealers in the San Francisco and Los Angeles areas to test the response of young buyers. These new trucks with their sporty look quickly gained the attention of old and young buyers alike. It seemed that owning a factory customized pickup had become as much a status symbol with some adults as owning a big luxury car. Soon Dodge realized that it was the Warlock that seemed to grab the most attention and so on June 11,1976 R.H. Kline announced to the press that Dodge would immediately release their newest addition to its Adult Toys series, calling it the Warlock......." ( from article "The Last American Hot Rod")

Information from another web page which appears to be no longer active, indicated the initial production run for the Warlocks and True Spirits to test market reaction was 200 each. Those trucks were supposed to all be D100 2WD short bed step sides in a variety of colors and engine options.

As far as total production for the Adult Toy Series trucks (Warlocks, True Spirits, Warlock IIs and Lil Red Express Trucks) the only information I came across was from Skip Gibbs "Red Express Connection/Truck’in thru the 70s" and "Li'l Red Express truck, Source & Fact book". They listed production figures for the TS and LRE but data for the Warlocks was unavailable.

While the Warlocks were factory produced it should also be noted that the Decal Packages, chrome steps and racks were also available to the dealers so it is possible that that some Warlocks could have been dealer produced (making your documentation very important).

As far as the number of 440 powered W100 produced in 76 that information might be available in Galen Goviers' "Dodge Light Truck Code Book, second edition" (unfortunately my copy went when I sold the TS).

For what it's worth During the 1976 model year Dodge produced 3,521 D100 2WD Short-Bed Step-Side pickups. Only 70 were equipped with the 440 engine. This is just a guess but I would suspect that 440 powered W100 Shortbed Stepsides would be an extremely low figure too.

Most of my research was done 10 years ago and there wasn't a whole lot out there. Hopefully it helps a little bit.

Thank you for all the feedback everyone! I’ve tried to contact Skip Gibbs, the author of a Warlock book, but he has not returned my emails or phone messages. I’ve also posted on his Facebook page. Any other info is really appreciated!!!

Re: Dodge Warlock production numbers? - 04/04/19 04:53 PM

Thanks for posting the shipping document above. I have a '79 that the equipment label was still legible. The shipping document has additional codes that are not on the equip. label.
As for production #'s, it has been my understanding that due to the Warlock being merely an option pkg. no production figures survived the years. Part of the Warlock pkg. was the front anti-sway bar, which helps identification (yes even on 4x4's).
Here's a pic of mine which was found sitting outside in the original owner's field after a 10 yr. "rest". It was within 5 miles or so of the original selling dealer. Sheetmetal was solid, so we went to work on a resto.

[b]The True Spirit was also sold in Tempe AZ. Didn't ever read about San Francisco. Very few were stepsides. I bought one from the original owners grandson 5 years ago and sold it 2 years ago= Was all original paint/interior etc and came with paper work From shipping. Probably still have copies. The Warlock in 1976 was produce in ;numbers that I believe to remember as like 2100. Seems like that would conflict with total production of 3500 total

I own a 1978 short bed Power Wagon 4x4 adult toy with funky factory original paint and faded Adult Toy lettering on the tailgate. I also couldn’t find any production numbers. I know it’s not a Warlock, but thought I’ll chime in. It is equipped with
440 cid
727 auto
Bucket/ buddy seats
A/C
Factory Mopar AM/FM CB radio
Full time 4X4

Thanks. I remember the TV commercial where bikini girls were posing around the Adult Toys. It was filmed here in Pismo Beach. California. I don’t think nowadays they can use these terms some people might get offended.

There was a black Warlock 4x4 440 identical to yours for sale for quite a while at a classic car place called TnT Motors in Valparaiso, IN that I looked at a couple of times, he wanted $24K for it but it was a survivor that had nice paint and was all original. He went out of business a few years back and I don't know what happened to it. I owned a dozen Warlocks through the years and am Warlockless now... frown

Very nice truck!

I’m not sure if your trucks stripe package is factory, perhaps the stripping is custom?

This style of stripe is not listed in the 78-81 DT Manual.

It appears have some similarities to the “Top Hand” package which may have been a regional or dealer package?

Respectfully

I'm not sure MaxWedge, could've been dealer or regional package, but it's sure looks factory original. The paint is original never been painted. I also remember the vans having similar paint. It is a good conversion piece. I like all the cool options, specially the AM/FM CB radio and factory tach.

My dad purchased this new in 77. The dealer sent it out when they got it to have it customized. This is the paint job that was done. My father met the painter that painted it and said that it was the only one that they did like it.
