2003 Jeep Wrangler

There are times when I can't get the transmission out of park,, Is there a safety switch somewhere and can it just be disconnected? Thanks..

Our 04 PT you have to step on the brake pedal to get it out of park. I suspect there is an interlock in the anti-lock system that has to sense brake pressure before the lever can be moved. I don't know if that can be bypassed, short of eliminating the entire anti-lock brake system.

The next thing that comes to mind is that your parking on a hill/grade and the Jeep is rolling against the parking pin making it difficult to pull it out of park. After you park, does the Jeep roll a little when you take your foot off the brake pedal? If your emergency brake (or parking brake) still works, you might want to try setting it before you lift your foot off the brake pedal when you park and see if that solves the problem. Gene

Every vehicle from about 2002 on was Federally Mandated to have a Brake Interlock System that required you to step on the brake pedal to move the shifter out of Park.
So you can thank the government for that, they didn't want little kids pulling the shifter out of park.


The shifter linkage is now actually a cable which on Chrysler Product is called a BITSI Cable (pretty sure it's an acronym for Brake Interlock System).

It uses an electric solenoid on the cable to lock the shifter from coming out of Park unless you step on the brake which energizes the solenoid.

There's a manual override on the system that usually requires a thin pick pushed through a hole for towing purposes when the battery is dead.

My driveway has a pretty good downhill slant and sometimes I have trouble getting it out of park. I have learned to set the emergency brake before putting it into park.
