1984 Dodge Ram 350 1 ton vin number?

1984 Dodge Ram 350 1 ton vin number? - 05/23/18 10:14 AM

What in the vin would show that a truck is a 1 ton? Is there an emblem on the side, like the Ram emblem, that would say it's a 1 ton? It has 6 lug wheels.

6 lug wheel is GM sourced.

Badge saying 350 would have come on the one ton. Not sure if the vi is specific enough.

Got the gvw? Pics of front end? Pics of the front hanger of the rear springs? Door jamb sticker and underhood sticker can be helpful.

Are you sure it does not have 8 lug wheels? I do not think Dodge used any 6 lug wheels in 1984. Some of the later Dakota trucks had 6 lug wheels. None of those are 1 tons though. Some of the really old (1930s or 40's???) Dodges may have had 6 lug wheels. If if does have 6 lug wheels and it's a 4x4, someone probably swapped Chevy axles under the truck.

In regard to the VIN number, in some years there was a digit in the VIN which denoted a GVW range. In other words, this digit would identify the truck as being between a minimum and a maximum GVW limits. Having the GVW range may, or may not, help you to determine whether or not the truck was originally a one ton. If the GVW range is high, then it is probably a one ton. If it is a lower GVW range, the truck could have been a 3/4 or a 1 ton. Often times, there is little difference between a 3/4 and a 1 ton truck.

IIRC, my '84 and '85 had the series in the Ram badge on the fender. work

The badge on the front fenders have enough room for the 350 under the Ram's horns, which I think is where the 350 designation should be, but I can't enlarge it sharp enough to read, too blurry. Being at an angle doesn't help either.

6th digit will be a 3 for a 1 ton, a 2 for a 3/4. I would add though that there isn't a lot of difference between the 2 except for the front axle rating. If it's a 3/4 with a 4000# axle it's as good as a 1 ton. If it has the original options sticker under the hood or in the glove box it will tell you. Most 3/4 tons had the 3800# front axle but there was also a 3600# I believe.

Thanks. I still prefur a '76 to '78. Maybe a '74/5, I'd have to do some research on those 2 years. This one has a 318 so is probably a light duty truck.
