99 Dakota keeps blowing low pressure power steering hose? - 03/05/18 04:06 AM

I bought this 99 Dakota 318, was supposed to have a new power steering pump on it and looks like it’s new. It blew the low pressure hose off about a month ago, figured whoever put the pump on didn’t get it tight. Well today it blew off again, I was able to get it back on and figured maybe I didn’t get the clamp tight last time. Well it blew
Off again in a few miles. I put a new hose on and double clamped both ends and it blew the hose out. I’m wondering if I had air in the system or if there is a pressure relief valve in the pump that is stuck? Any thoughts ?

The low pressure hose is the return line, be sure there is not an obstruction limiting the fluid return to the pump reservoir.
Its possible the pressure relief valve has stuck, but I would think the steering would be real quirky if the pressure was high enough to blow off a hose. Gene

I went outside and put a new low pressure hose on it, jacked it up, cap off power steering and turned the wheel back and forth, took about 5 minutes and the new low pressure hose blew again. Is the pressure relief valve under the cover on top of the steering sector?

Still sounds like a plug in the nipple to the pump. With the cap off, no
pressure in the tank.

Makes sense. I’ll check that today.

Just an update, put a rebuilt pump on it and no more blown hoses. I could blow through the return inlet on the old one but not quite as easily as the the new one. Thanks everyone.
