Can you swap a 1986 long box to a 1992?

Can you swap a 1986 long box to a 1992? - 02/26/18 01:11 AM

I bought a rust free 1986 Dodge D100 mainly for the box. In eyeballing my 1992 Dodge D250, it appears that there are differences in some of the rails. Can anyone shed some light on this? I would hate to remove both boxes only to find out that they won't work without major surgery. Thank you.

Pretty sure they're exactly the same. I'll let you know soon! LOL

I just bought an entire '85 D150 to swap the fenders, doors and complete bed onto my mangled '92 D250. Both trucks now shown in this thread...

Pretty sure the beds will swap, I'd take a few measurements first.
I believe the fenders and radiator support are unique to the 92-93.

A 86 bed will go on a 92 frame, but you need to cut 2 sheet metal brackets off the 2 middle under bed supports. The 92 frame has 2 little bulges that account for these. The year cut-off is sometime in 1989- we had a epic thread on moparts from 2011 about this but I can't find it now. But heres pics showing the gap (one of 2 on each side) from running a 90 bed on a 88 truck. You have the opposite problem and need a date with a sawzall

Iirc the little brackets are due to the difference in 6" vs 7" frames. This is not year dependent but gvw dependent.

Either way, pretty much bolt on, minor trimming in some places if the rails are different heights..

Fenders and doors swap too. Core support is different 91-93, 86-90,81-85 are the three styles.

I swapped out the parts last Saturday. I cut off the 4 tabs (2 per side). No sweat. Thanks again guys!
