Early 2000's Rams - 01/07/18 08:11 AM

I bought a 2004 Ram 1500 , 5.7 / AT / 4wd a couple months ago and I love it . Can you guys list all the known issues / part failures that are common with these trucks ?

So far so good at 188K....but I have no history on the truck .

yes , all my blend doors are stripped.... wink

In this town, rust over rear wheel openings.

If quad cab the wire harness pass through in the rear doors @ B pillars will fail. Sunvisors will droop and fail unless someone has already replaced them with the updated ones. Plastic cap on the top of the dashboard will be brittle and crack into a million pieces (if not already) when you touch it.

There was an airbag recall. Possibly a recall to make the horn blow when you open the door while backing up (don't get that). I think there may have been a rear axle issue, but that may be 2005?

doors in the heater box (blend door, defrost, panel, floor) will break. the servo motors will snap them. Like you said. there is a kit where you cut into the heater box and replace them without removing the heater box.

My 05 had the cab harness ps hose, and water pump replaced under warranty.

Post warranty repairs are mainly rust related. Ps cooler rotted out, steel tube that supports the plastic grill rotted, tailgate is shot along the bottom seam and about three inches up across the entire width, left box wheel opening is toast. Will need a new box side.

Other: two egr valves, both front unit bearings, parking brake lining debonded, a couple sets of front rotors and pads, one set of rear rotors and pads. Both air bags and the pinion nut retorque recall were done also. One set of tires and a battery, and a dozen or so sets of wiper blades.

There is a front driveline vibration at 55 that needs attention. Dealer says the boot retainer clip rots and lets salt into the splines. An hour labor and a clip and o ring fix the problem, unless the splines are too far gone.

It’s 13 years old in a couple of weeks, and has 111k miles.

My list is similar, but add:

rear driveshaft u-joints
rear diff cover replaced due to rust
rear diff pinion seal- changed without disassembling the rearend
power window switches - both sides
exhaust heat shield on passenger side has rusted off
lower idler pulley disintegrated - was able to limp it home
starter - the exposed copper portion corroded and failed
rack and pinion under warranty in addition to p/s hoses
blend door - always blowing out defrost in addition to other selections
power distribution box underhood has a failed circuit internally - taillights/front parking lights are manually operated with a toggle switch. Have been too lazy to wire up a relay and the replacement box is ~$400.
