84-85 Temperature Control

84-85 Temperature Control - 11/27/16 07:00 PM

My 84 Crew Cab Dually has what appears to be "dealer installed" AC?
Its obviously not factory when I compare its installation to the same year truck with factory AC. Regardless, the picture below is the temperature control unit that is in the truck.

Does anyone know what year this temperature control unit is from? Was it ever a factory unit or was it strictly for dealer installed units?

Tabs are broken on the backside and its in poor condition so I'd like to find a good used or NOS unit but can't seem to find this exact one in my searches.

Any info you can provide will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks Moparts for a great forum.

Well.... based upon the responses I'm feeling pretty good about myself that this apparently is not a typical temp control unit.

Like I said, the AC system is definitely not from the factory so I wonder if this possibly isn't even a Mopar part. Maybe its a Chevy control unit?

Regardless - maybe I'm better off sending the truck to Classic Air or some professional shop and let them retrofit the whole entire AC and control system?

Has anyone done such a thing where you took your truck to a professional place and let them go through the whole entire AC system?

Thanks!

Most of the time, if I turn anything I own over to a "professional" to do something done, I was usually disappointed in the quality of the work that was done by the "professional", and I'm somewhat of a hack.

After I see the "job" they do, for the money I paid them, the next time I learned to do it myself. I no longer farm out hardly anything, automotive related. I can screw it up just as good as the pro for a lot less money. Gene

My little brother had an '83 D150 w/ dealer add on A/C. While the dash control looked near factory, like my '82 and '84, it was still slightly different than O.E. Underhood it was an obvious add on.

Your dash control looks to be far different that his did and while I've never seen one like that I'll say it was an aftermarket addition. IIRC, there were two major manufacturers back in the day, ARA and the other escapes me at the moment. Clardy? shruggy

I remember having one out all that was there was a limit type switch to turn on the A/C it looks like a factory heater control with the switch and a new label over it .

How does that even work?

I had an '84 for awhile with factory AC and the controls for the vents were push button (vacuum).

If you want to keep the AC, maybe it would be easier in the long run to source EVERYTHING off a factory AC truck?

I know right?! I've considered that; the search for a donor truck continues. Where that becomes a sticky wicket is then I think it would be best/easiest/smartest to do an entire dash/wiring harness swap - and to do that, I'd prefer to keep the dash color original, and its brown. I've been searching for years and to no avail.....

Guess what color my truck was........ laugh2

On mine, the fan switch damaged the controls and I found out that the entire switch assembly was exactly the same as one I had out of a '78 B-body. The only difference was that the car one didn't have chrome buttons.

I guess I'm trying to say that some of the stuff can be sourced from other models.

Whhere are the vents with the add on system? Under the dash? Would it be possible to add factory vents to your dash? (to keep the brown).

I have an 85 crew cab and i added A/C. The truck was a stripped down military surplus W350. Truck had a tan interior and i wanted the early 90's Charcoal grey. So i located a 90 Ramcharger that was loaded with everything. I installed the whole A/C system and the grey dash and gauge panel face. This was an easy bolt in. The wiring was all there under the dash and out to the engine side of the fire wall. But nothing under the hood. I think I changed 1 plug on the 85 wiring for the back of the A/C selector. As far as cutting the vents out of the original dash in your truck the holes are marked in the plastic on the back side so it could be done. The dash face could be swapped from most any A/C truck.

I am not sure of any of this anymore, and I AM a product of the '60s, so this could all be a hallucination...

BUT, I think some of the older aftermarket air systems I have run across have used the factory, non air controls and placed a decal/ sticker on the face, showing a/c. Almost positive I have seen some older GM stuff this way, at least.

This used the off position (IIRC) as the a/c position. Maybe vent?

Not sure of this, and all of the stuff I have is factory air ... maybe someone who has a non air truck could look at their controls.

Might be worth a call to Vintage air or one of the aftermarket companies, maybe some old timer like me but with a better memory could help you ...
