Pro Street pickups?

Pro Street pickups? - 10/20/16 04:00 AM

I recently picked up a 1981 Dodge stepside pickup.
I have no desire to leave it as it is. whistling

I was thinking of a 15x10 rear with 5.5" backspace and a 325/50/15..... but has anybody tubbed one? The gas tank in the way of moving the springs inside the frame the only obstacle I can see....

Any tubbed stepsides here? Dragula??

Thanks.

Nothing worth mentioning.... lol
I did redo all the window winding mechanisms and put Alpine type R 6x9 speakers in the doors, then put the newer door panels on.
I'm collecting parts like crazy, I want a small block truck with some snort....

There is a Ramcharger Gas Tank for sale in Bothell, WA in case you are interested. I am going to Kenmore, WA for T-Day and I could look at it for you.

Look at the photo, that is a Ram Truck tank, not a RamCharger tank.
I have a 1983 RamCharger fuel tank that is fitted with an -6AN fuel fitting connected to a 3/8" pickup. Send me a PM if interested. I'll sell it cheap, just not sure how to ship it?

Re: Pro Street pickups? - 11/29/16 03:41 PM

I used the 68 A-body 8 3/4 with a shackle/axle flip/flop tucking in 12x15 rims with a 29x15x15 M/T on my 88-440 truck.

A-body and truck share the same 43" perch centers on the leafs. was a bolt up deal after removing the rear shackle mount and replacing it with a front spring mount to flip shackle. axle bolt right on top of spring with A-body u-bolts/shock plates. I used truck shocks.

gives a nice drag stance, good ride/handling, still haul a 440/trans in the rear with no axle/frame contact.

I have a e-body 8 3/4 I going to use on my next truck.

you can fit a 10x15 rim with M/T 29x15x15 on a stock width truck/c-body housing with 7" backspace on rim and tub work.

the A-body 8 3/4 used a 12x15 with 4.5 backset

if I measured correctly the e-body 8 3/4 will allow 10x15 with a 5" BS

I also used a 70 mustang gas tank mounted in the rear frame rails 125$ fuel gauge works and 3/8 pick up tube.

LMK if you want some pics.

Not a step-side, but went the pro-street route with M/T's and Mustang tank as Scratchin' mentioned...

Mopar Sam here you go.

rattler, little 512RB LOL. that is a killer green 57 stepside for sure. we need a pic to remind us just how green it is.

70Duster440, hats off to your father/son project. well done!

I cut a long bed down for the tubs and to replace the floor in a short box. after I flip flopped the A-body 8 3/4 in.

flight727 with a 440/a-body 8 3/4 set up. used some square stock bolted to frame to mount the a-body shackle hanger.

Re: Pro Street pickups? - 11/30/16 03:35 PM

IIRC, member kenworth Goose moved the leafs to the inside frame rails by boxing the frame and moving the mounts left to right on inside of frame rails. then narrowed a 8 1/4 rear axle for 18.5 or 21.5 M/Ts

I didn't get any of those pics. but it was a cool way of narrowing the 8 1/4 housing at home with some all thred rod and torch/welder.

a few here said he could not do it...but he did. AND it worked! IIRC even Moser looked at it when they cut/resplined the stock axles and said well done.

Re: Pro Street pickups? - 12/06/16 04:52 AM

This is what we THINK we've found out..... lol

79" total rear body width. I can get away with 76" outside of tire to outside of tire.
With a 295/65/15 on a 15x10 rim with 3 1/2" backspace we figure we need a rear end 59 1/4" overall width.
Springs are 43 1/2" center to center apart.

A 1966/1967 B body rear end is 59 1/2" overall width and 44" spring centers......

Hmmmmmm

I'll just have to split the inner can on the bed and move the inner to the next raised bed section, about 3 1/2" inches inboard, toss a strip in and make it pretty and nobody should be able to tell we monkeyed around....
An 8 3/4 is .65" longer center of axles to center of u joint, and my driveshaft looks a wee bit short anyways, the swap will probably HELP?! lol

Re: Pro Street pickups? - 12/06/16 05:52 PM

the 72-74 truck 8 3/4 housing is 59" outside to outside bearing cup.

same as 73-74 c-body 8 3/4 housing.

I have a 67 c-body Polara 8 3/4 housing with a 55.5" housing 46" perch center and a set of 30" axles. it may be close to the 59 1/4 over all width your measurements come up with.

I will throw a tape on a set of stock 8 3/4 truck axles in the housing for a over all width measurement.

I wager the 67 c-body housing is going to be real close. I came up with a 325/15/15 on a 10x15 with 3.5 bs when I did my measuring. BUT I did measure for the B-body housing and was very close to same measurements = I already have the 67 c-body housing,

if you look at pics of my tubs you can see I moved over to the floor/frame bracket. tubs flush with outside frame rails. did my stepside over to the floor/frame mount same way.

that would be best IMHO.

Re: Pro Street pickups? - 12/07/16 04:14 AM

How does it handle with the springs mounted inside the frame vs under it? I thought they were supposed to" have erratic handling characteristics" according to an old Mopar chassis book.Tire clearance looks amazing with stock rail placement!

I think the inner factory tub will be going to the frame rail for sure, just in case I try something bigger.... we have spare 21.50/33/15s..... lol You never know...
Moving springs aint too hard for us.
I was planning on 325/50/15s on 15x10 with a 3.5" backspace! But I came up with 66/67 B body rear. I have a 68 C body 8 3/4 available next weekend, we are parting out a 1968 300.....

Re: Pro Street pickups? - 12/07/16 02:03 PM

that 68 c-body is same width as a stock truck rearend.

I have seen/used a 10x15 rim with 7.5 bs and just split the tubs with a fill panel.

does not have the deep dish look to the rim but fits them in there nicely with no work other than tubs.

Moser can cut them down cheaply enough, about 40 bone to and from and my last cut down was 65 bones.

I am sending in another to cut down to A-body specs with large offset axles/brakes.

325/50/15 = 29x15x15 M/T sportsman/sportsman pro/sportsman SR radials

same as the old N50-15

thanks Kenworth Goose, love to see that truck. that's a lot of tire.

I dont think my 1964 D100 is a Pro street, but I did modify the box with big tubs to fit 16 inch tires. The springs are in stock location on outside of the frame.

Thanks for the chart Venom! Perfect.

I am thinking 325/50/15 drag radials, but no idea. If I have to move the fuel tank I will probably move the springs inside the frame rails.... I have some new 21.50s kicking around.....

While, I don't consider mine a Pro Street, I have mini tubed and swapped out to a Ramcharger tank. 2.5" mini tub with early C body 8 3/4, currently running 295/40/18 with LOTS of room for more. I will try to load some pics.
