Just bought a 97 Dodge Ram 1500 with a 3.9 auto. It will accelerate to about 30 mph, and no more. Engine is still running, but not speeding up. No codes, and no check engine lites on. Where do i start checking?

Disconnect the battery and let it sit for a short while then try it again. It sounds like it's in limp mode. If it's a trans causing it to go into limp it won't give you a code or a light you can read without the trans reader.

A 97 with a 3.9 should have a 42RE trans. Does the transmission shift or just stay in one gear. Does the engine sound like it's laboring or is it revving high?

Trans shifts up and down no problem. The engine just seems to flat spot. push on the accelerator, and nothing, no bucking, backfiring, nothing.

In 73-75, at a Service station I worked at, we had 4 cars that had the same problem.. All 4 turned out to be collapsed exhaust pipes..
Inner and outer tubing, and the inner had collapsed and blocked the exhaust..
After the 1st one, the rest were a lot easier to diagnose...

Check for a restricted catalytic converter

I concur, clogged exhaust.

Cleaned the catalytic converter out, and voila, no more problem! Thanks for the advice!
