What's a better engine, 5.7 or 6.4 hemi in a 3500 crew cab? - 06/05/16 02:31 AM

Haven't heard much about the 6.4. I only heard the 5.7 isn't a high mileage engine... Not sure how true that is. I'm in the market for a new truck, and would like to get 300K miles out of an engine.... I know, but diesels are $9k more.

Thought and experience, please chime in...

What about a diesel left over from the previous year? Might make the price better???

I guess I didn't realize there was a truck forum... Shoot I just saw the 3rd gen. Hemi forum, that may have been the place to ask...

6.4L. Steel crank, revised exh manifolds with extra bolts, coolant cooled egr, sodium filled inkenel exh valves and more. Med and Heavy duty versions. Way to go if there is no diesel option.

I bought a 2015 2500 4x4 with the 5.7 Hemi without MDS 383 HP and 400 TQ and really like it. It is a much different engine from the normal MDS 395 HP engine but hasn't been around long enough for long-term mileage testing, though I am sure it is pretty much the same as the regular 5.7 Hemi. I just turned 31K today coming back from Minnesnowta with nary a problem so far, I bought it in August last year. shock I didn't but the 6.4 because of gas mileage concerns since I drive it daily, but also because it is only 410 HP and 429 torque, not that much different. work My truck hauls my 32' LQ trailer loaded at 11K lbs with no issues. Gets about the same mileage as my 2004 diesel got towing, but not as good mileage not towing. shruggy

Well, you won't get 300k out of any of these new diesels without some expensive trinket failing on you. twocents

or $120 oil changes

or higher cost for fuel at the pumps, plus DEF$.

When you have 200k on a 6.4 or 5.7 you will be able to pick up another engine for $1500 at the autowrecker and keep on truckin'.

6.4 is the best in your spec. 5.7 would be great for a regular cab long-box.

Show me these 1500 dollar engines please! Especially a a non 5.7 hemi, or even a 5.7 without a 100k.

Is the same plastic "shoe" installed in the 6.4 V8 timing chain tensioner mechanism as has been failing in the model year 2009+ 5.7 V8 MDS recently?
