2012 RAM with 4.7L 36 month service - 09/15/15 08:15 PM

My owners manual says I need to change the top row of plugs on my 4.7L engine at 36 months or 48,000 miles.

I just changed the oil and filter at 36 months and did my normal crawl-around-under-my-truck inspection to make sure everything is still attached. Everything looks good.

My truck only has 9058 miles on it. Do I really need to change the plugs? I know they will still look like new and it won't change the performance any but will I have any warranty issues if I postpone the plug replacement for a while?

My track record is spotty when I have replaced things that didn't need replacing. Too often I break something.

I wouldn't even consider changing them. Worst case scenario, if you had a warranty claim the dealer associated with the plugs they would bill you for the change. How much real warranty do you have left on a 2013?

Seems like for how clean modern efi vehicles run, most seem to never have the plugs or wires changed in their lifetimes.

Unless you own a V6 honda pilot...then they say the irridum plugs need changed at 35k when a bunch of check engine lights come on.. then again at 75k....

I think the plugs are just standard plugs. Not to bad of a job to change out. Do you make a lot of short trips or just don't use the truck that much? Short trips would be hard on plugs and oil. Is that the first oil change at 36mo?

Forget about changing the plugs and just drive it.

I have changed the oil every 6 months. About every 1500 miles. Plus one extra, 100 miles after I had just changed it, that the dealer mistakenly did when I took it in for some warranty work.

I drive it 2 or 3 times a week. A couple of trips are usually short (2 or 3 miles) and one may be longer (10 to 50 miles).

My 06 has 182K on it right now. I bought it with 126K 4-5 yrs ago. I change the oil 4 times a year and that's about it. I used a programer to get a little more bang from it as the 06 4.7 is a dog. With the extra power the programer added, I'm happy. Decent power now and very decent MPG. Even living where we live I get 16.5-17. On a trip to the Mopar Nats I got just under 20. 2006 1500, QC 4x4, 4.7/auto I did have to have my trans rebuilt around 150-160k, that was about 2 grand. I'm a 4.7 fan.

Your going to want to change those plugs at 48k. At least the top ones. The bottom ones are platinum. The earlier single plug 3.7/4.7 engines would wear the plugs down into the porcelain at 40k. The later duel plug engines do a little better but not much.
Your going to need a very thin wall socket. The only one I found that fit was one from snap-on.
Don't be surprised if the spark plug boot sticks to the plug and tears off. You can buy those separate from the coil if you do.
Make sure you use some dielectric grease on the boots when reassembled.
