My 69 D100 came back to me 20 years later.... - 05/17/15 02:27 AM

Well guys, after some hard times the last 5-6 years (which included closing down my business, having to sell my 79 LRT I owned since 1987, my 77 Warlock 4x4 and my 78 440 Trailduster, all very nice driver/local show quality trucks, because of financial problems) but now getting back on my feet, I acquired one of my very early builds back 20 years later after selling it to a friend back in 1995. It's a 1969 D100 sweptline, was a rust free 318 3spd on the tree truck back when I picked in up in 1994 out of Wyoming. First thing I did was rebuild a 78 E58 360cid, 10 to 1 pistons, ported and polished big valve heads with MP springs, 484 Mopar Purple camshaft, adjustable rockers, MP electronic ignition, Edelbrock performer intake, Holley 650, ceramicoat headers and 40 series flowmasters. Next was build a 727 with Kevlar bands, Turbo Action kit and TCI converter, then installed a 3:55 sure grip chunk in the 8 3/4 rear. Last but not least I lowered the truck by pulling leaf springs and installed the Weld Drag Stars with Mickey Thompson Sportsman tires front and rear. Now that the truck was done, except for paint, my buddy had to have it, so I sold it to him with about 200 miles on the drivetrain. He did the right thing and tore the faded paint body down including removing all glass and interior then had the truck painted, installed new front and rear glass plus all seals and gaskets, now this is all back in 1995...So don't be surprised by the color... He drove it a total of 500 miles in 20 years and it sat in his 4 car garage all this time, well he called me about 6 months ago and asked me if I wanted to buy it back, I couldn't say "Hell Yes" fast enough, we agreed on a deal and it's mine again. Can't tell you how good it feels to be back in the 69 again..Still putting finishing touches on truck(stainless, chrome, etc.)but I am driving it, I'll keep you guys updated on progress and pics. Thanks, Greg

doesn't look so bad that color.. if it were mine i'd paint the bumpers and grille white and be done.

Yep, already looking into painting bumpers, grille and D O D G E on tailgate an off white color.. I have already installed chrome headlight rings, new door handles from Vanns and a NOS stainless gas cap.

Oh yea, I did replace all 4 tires on the truck with another set of Mickey Thompson Sportsman tires from Summit, the ride home on the 20 year old tires was a little thumpy thumpy....

great story, glad you got it back. Not so sure on the color...but to have a ready to go truck, especially that vintage, and did I say not have to do anything to it....it would grow on me. I agree on the white bumpers and grill.

The color is a late 50's Dodge color, I believe. There are a few restored trucks around here in that color. I don't mind it a bit. It would not be my first choice, but as long as it's in good shape, I'd run it! smile

My buddie told me the color choice was a 1993 Isuzu Amigo Coral Reef, color code #805/R906P802-0.

What's up Sam? Hope all is well. The mild addiction begins again......The only cure to this addiction was going broke, as I found out, but I'm back on my feet again and still have a truck addiction. It starts with one....

This is what I was referring to. No matter, the salmon is a great color on those trucks!

Be different. Keep the color, go dark scallops, maybe navy blue or a forest green?. I was thinking flames, but IMHO the scallops would look better with the horizontal lines of the body. I'd keep it level with the nose a little lower than tail, looks pretty good to me now. Maybe paint the wheels the same color as the bumpers.

Back in the day I had a thing for 1932 - 1934 Ford trucks, eventually owned three, sold the best one. The thing is, when I was hunting them down, they were newer than the Sweptlines are today! My '64Dog is 51.

dogdays has it. It looks way too 80's right now but I couldn't think of a good way to fix it. Scallops would suit the body perfectly and get rid of the Coddington curse.

With the paint still looking and shining great, I've been working and upgrading more mechanical items than the paint right now. The 360 in the truck has a complete Magnum serpentine belt system on it (which has also been installed 20 years)with Dodge Sanden compressor and Dodge Denso alternator, so yesterday I installed new tensioner and serp belt. Also pulled the original 1969 2 core radiator(with dual electric fans) and installed a new 3 core aluminum radiator(for A-bodies). I also had to install new molded radiator hose's because they were also 20 years old and top one with new radiator moved to drivers side instead of center of top tank (1992 360 magnum Ramcharger/truck hose worked perfect). Then I made brackets for the condenser to mount to the core support instead of being zip tied through the fins with those push zip ties that mount tranny coolers to radiators. Already changed all the fluids, spark plugs, installed new Quick Fuel carb, Holley Blue pump, all 3 brake hose's, all 4 shocks and other little things. Once I dial it in for a worry free driver, then I'll do a little updating on the looks. Guys at work have already nick named it "Miss Piggy".....kinda fat-kinda low-kinda the same color....Ha, I still luv this truck......

The Scarebird kit for front disk brakes is relatively inexpensive and will get you better stopping power.

What size tires and rims front and rear are those?....getting ready to put tires and wheels on my boys '64 sweptline.

Re: My 69 D100 came back to me 20 years later.... - 06/01/15 08:22 PM

On my '64Sweptline I was able to fit 15 x 7s running 31-10.50x15 in front, and on the back a 15 x 8 running 32-11.50 x 15.

I wasn't going for the street look, with those tall tires.

I believe the wheels were American Racing white spoke.

The left front rubbed on the steering arm during left turns at full lock. There was no room for the 11.50s up front.

The rear tires fit exactly, I couldn't have gone any bigger. Less than 1" from tire to fender inner surface. But I did a lot of towing and hauling with that truck and the rears never rubbed.

Front tires are 28x7.50x15 Mickey Thompson Sportsman and rears are 29x12.50x15 Mickey Thompson Sportsman, pulled leaf springs front and rear to lower it, just don't remember how many leafs as I did it 20 years ago..
