Educate me on my 47RE - 04/09/15 05:19 AM

Sorry if this has been asked in the past. I have a 2003 (built Sept 02) Ram 2500 with the 5.9L (250) Cummins SMARTY JR programmed with an additional 70hp for towing and the 47re 4 speed overdrive auto running 3.73 in the diffs.
My issue is with towing my 26' enclosed car hauler and steep grades. In 3rd gear the diesel is cranking 2300rpm at 60mph. In overdrive it drops to 1800rpm at the same speed however on hills I drop revs and running below that I'm worried I'll burn up that tranny. The problem is the big jump or loss in power between 3rd and 4th. Any suggestions for mods to the existing tranny to help keep it all together and not grenade the tranny?
Thx in advance.

Downshift or use the OD lockout when hitting steep grades. That's what it's for.

There's several reasons to drop a gear, all center around heat. Heat that damages the trans and engine.

At lower engine speeds it takes more boost and fueling to create the same power, this drives up EGTs and can hurtthe turbo and possibly burn valves. 2300 rpm is a cake walk for theCummins and better than lugging at 1800. If you have egt readout try to stya below 1300.

At lower rpm the torque conveter is being worked hard and building lots of heat. Higher rpm puts the converter closer to it's optimum speed creating less heat buildup.

As for loss of power, when dropping a gear you do have to add more throttle. The engine is spinning faster and moving more air, you need to add fuel to keep up.

Maybe this is something that you can tune with the programmer?

Sorry boys guess my title was misleading and I wasn't clear. I'm researching what modifications others have made to their 47re tranny's to overcome the obvious issues when towing.

actually being in lockup helps cool the transmission----the slipping causes heat....

Go to the PATC web site (google search PATC) they have everything you could possibly need to grenade proof your 47RE.

Yes. Looks like PATC offers up to 5 levels of upgrades to consider.
Thanks for the lead.

There was another mod to the oiling holes in the OD section you could do while it was apart. I'll have to see if I can find it again.

The shaft mod is to drill this hole out to 3/16"
