Headers for 98-03 Dakota - 08/26/14 11:12 PM

Has anyone or will anyone ever make a DECENT set of
longtubes for a 2wd 5.9 Dakota?

A few months ago I seen a Ram with headers in the wrecking yard and the flanges were cracked on both sides.......so, I understand what you mean when you say "decent".

Apparently the '92 318 Magnums had the best exhaust manifold with a larger opening vs the later versions. Might be something to look into if you can't find headers.

What else is done to the exhaust, or are you planning?

Yes I think the '92 had a 2.25 outlet and everything later
is 1.875? Crazy small!

I have thought about trying to find '92s but guessing most would be
rusted to hell or warped by now?

Meh, maybe not: takes probably a hundred years to warp 35 pounds of cast iron.

Throw your catalytic convertor in the garbage and go true dual, if you have'nt already. Makes a noticible difference.

Electric fan is another worthwhile upgrade.

Look at the Hooker 5803. For earlier Dakotas but should fit the later ones also.

Thanks,has anyone tried these on a 97-03?
I dont want to be the "test pilot"
You would think if they did fit, Hooker would advertise
as such?

A 97 Dakota is completely different then a 96, I'd really be surprised if the headers for the older truck would fit the newer one. Sorry, Gene

There's some sets of long tubes out there, but they're a pain to install. Mopar performance 'PPH' headers are a mid-length, tri-y design that will support 450+ RWHP. They can be found used for $400-ish.

Spintech makes a nicer mid-length for about 700 that will support a TON of power.

Both sets install easily from the top in about an hour

I put a set of Edelbrock TES headers on my 99 R/T. They are only slightly longer than a shorty set, but they came with a y pipe also. I put them on while I had the front clip off. I had to adapt and modify a few things because they weren't exactly made for the R/T. I had to cut and re-weld the y pipe, and also add extra o2 bungs because they didn't come with enough. I also had re-done my cat in 3" so it was a complete custom job. They are nice, and really had no fitment issues. Hope that helps...
