How many 77 1/2 ton 440 Trucks with in cab tank? - 07/08/14 01:15 AM

I've run into a guy who claims his truck is one of less than 100 77 D150 Custom with a 440 & not only that he claims it has a factory in cab tank as well as the tank under the bed FACTORY

Have any of you heard of a Factory in cab & under bed gas tanks together on a 77?

There were a few years in the late '70s where you could order two tanks, and in some cases they came with the in-cab and under bed tank. I've also seen the two under bed tanks in those years as well, so I'm not sure why the two options existed after the normal in-cab tanks were phased out...

Not many 1/2 tons came with 440, I have one myself (76 W100 shortbox AdventurerSport 4x4 with auto and fact. A/C)

After mid 75 model year there were no more in cab tanks in the factory service manuals or parts catalogs

Short bed or long bed? There is no true production number on 77 but based on all the other years that's probably a fairly accurate number for short beds 2wd 1/2 tons 440 trucks. I own a 77 Adventurer SE swb 440 with dual tanks plus most other options as well. 77 was the year Dodge was going away from the in cab tank but if you ordered a short bed dual tank truck early in the production it still came with the in cab tank. Later production 77's and most trucks for the west coast that year had both tanks in the bed. Here's a picture of mine.

It's in my 77 service manual for in cab tank, but the brochure says no in cab tank for 77

Picture of a 76 440 Adventurer SE with dual tanks that is probably one of best documented trucks, meaning having all it's original paper work to prove it is exactly what it is said to be, by build sheet, window sticker, etc....

I see it in the service manual but no where else

There's also claiming a 78 ClubCab with two under bed tanks & a in cab all factory also

As I recall to get dual tanks in 77-78 you had to have a long box. Both tanks were under the bed.

I would like to see a under hood sheet showing dual tanks on a 77 short box.

We converted many trucks to dual tank in cab with all factory parts. It was plug and play with factory parts and if you have one it would look like a factory install.

The factory FSM was full of mis-information. The FSM combined 74-77 as I recall.

I know of a bunch that were converted when new
But I know Larry is dead on when it comes to these little facts
I have a huge collection of factory literature & have studied just about every Dodge truck for options that I've came in contact with & have only seen a hand full of factory dual tank SWB trucks like that
Larry has the only 77 I've ever seen

He's posted the 76 before & I've read & heard of it elsewhere too & it has to be the most documented one that I've ever seen

It's listed in my 78-81 catalog but not anywhere else I've found yet

In cab tanks were still offered in 78 on cab/chassis 1 tons.

With the inside the frame tank on one side and exhaust on the other, there was no place for a pto driven hydraulic pump.

I can't prove you wrong on my truck it originally had two equipment labels, you could see the evidence of where the second label had been when I got the truck but label 2 of 2 was long gone, and label 1 of 2 was there but only about 50% of it was readable of course not the part about dual tanks. When I redid my equipment labels I based them on what was on the truck, so no concrete proof. I will say however if it was converted someone went to a lot of trouble with all the sound deadener in place all the factory crimp on hose clamps, etc...., every detail looks completely factory, even no evidence of the buddy seat center upper support brace for the seat back when in the upright position ever being there. So I say it's factory but I can't absolutely prove it like can be done on the white 76.

Not really OT cause I wanted to bring out as many facts on these trucks as I could

I have a guy trying to sell me one & I just can't believe some of the things he's claiming & won't give me a partial VIN to verify what he's selling is in fact a 440 SWB D100 Custom

Thanks Barry! I guess the print is so small in my code book that came from GG that I couldn't see it
I've been through that thing numerous times!

I know of a 77 CrewCab that the original owners son says is a factory in cab that I dismissed as dealer installed. being the truck has been on the farm since new & now finding this out I'm more leaning towards believing him

As far as the ClubCab & other truck I'd have to say those are dealer installs

I recently drug home a (11/77) 78 crew long bed dually. Has an in cab tank and regular one. All looks factory. I haven't looked that hard at it but was told it was a factory big block truck.

Re: How many 77 1/2 ton 440 Trucks with in cab tank? - 07/13/14 03:52 PM

Slightly off topic, but over the years I have owned and driven many of these trucks.
I had a 73 D100 with dual tanks. One in cab and one under, but only one gas cap. The filler neck had a Y in it and one branch went straight into the cab tank, and one branch went down, through the floor and into the frame tank. You simply stuck the nozzle in horizontal to fill the cab tank, or stuck it in pointing down to fill the frame tank.
On my current 75 W100 440 shortbox, it only has the in cab tank but has two gas caps. The one on the box is a painted dummy cap which is screwed in place. I had another like that too.

Re: How many 77 1/2 ton 440 Trucks with in cab tank? - 07/14/14 03:09 AM

Been out to Carlisle and just got back, while there I picked up a book that I had never seen before for 77 Dodge trucks. It is the 1977 Dodge Truck Sales Manual. In it it breaks down standard equipment, available packages, whats new for 1977 and additional factory installed options. It covers all trucks, Ramchargers, Sportsman wagons, Tradesman Vans, d500,600 & 700 trucks, Motorhome chassis pretty well all aspects of the truck line for that year. There were some options that I had no idea were available and were a first for that year, but my point to this is in the additional factory installed options for d100,d200,d300,w100,w200,w300 and w400 it lists and I quote "HL4 In-cab 24 gal. cap. mtd. behind seat on conv. or crew-cab sweptline pick-up models N.A. w/hinge-back bench seat" so it was available but the seat would have not folded forward, as in the bucket seat "buddy seat" package like in my truck or a fixed bench seat that did not fold forward. So I think there is the answer as far as 77 is concerned.

My '76 Adventurer sport (short bed) came with an in cab, and in frame tank. I took the in cab tank out. For what I use it for, it doesn't need it. I also got tired of the sloshing sounds all the time. The in frame tank gives me plenty of fuel.

Re: How many 77 1/2 ton 440 Trucks with in cab tank? - 07/15/14 04:37 AM

This is the correct wording for the HL4 option.

HL4 24 gals.---In Cab behind seat---For use with 131" wb. Conv and 165 wb. Crew Cab Sweptline pickups only. Not available with Hinged-Back Bench Seat.

The standard tank was frame mounted in front of the rear axle. The HL4 in cab was in addition to the factory frame mounted tank.

I ordered my 77 reg cab short box 4x4 new and I could not get an auxiliary tank. I added the new tank before I drove it. The bench seat with the fold down back would work but the release levers had to be bent on a 45 degree so they would not rub through the tank. 30 seconds with a 12 inch crescent wrench fixed that.

Again if someone can prove they had a factory short bed regular cab put up the documentation. Just because it has one now does not mean it rolled out of the factory with one 36 years ago.

They are out there. Biggest way to tell if factory or not is the nice Metal decal next to the switcher valve switch in the dash below the ac controls... if it is there and says "STD in AUX out", then it is factory. There was no replacement part for that decal... if its got that decal, and no in bed spare tire mount, then its factory.
But what do I know...I'm friggin stupid when it comes to these trucks....

No way to assess that, no numbers for 77, but the car guru says 121 for 76 model, and 74 units for 78... soon who knows...sure there is something somewhere...but it has not surfaced yet.

Re: How many 77 1/2 ton 440 Trucks with in cab tank? - 07/20/14 07:10 PM

Sam I would have to agree with you
I figured the car guru didn't put forth much effort in the truck department & let the numbers slide in the dumpster

I find it funny when these guys claim these numbers & actually no one knows

The guy I'd been talking with displayed every view & what I did see was the wrong angle & length on a in cab filler neck

131" wb Conv cab = Reg Cab with 8' bed
165" wb Crew cab = the farmers son I know is probably right

I know I've seen a bunch of tow, tug, dump, roll, sweeper & host of other commercial style trucks with an in cab & that is a given by it being available in the parts books up into the 80's

Dealer installed only or truck body vendor it seems possibly factory through the dealer commercial Truck department

I still have to differ there, seen plenty of ssb 77 and a few 78 trucks with an in cab tank that was auxiliary.
Just to blow your mind a little, and I will have to look up the code, but there is a code that is for a special tank configuration in cab only, not in frame, and was on 76 and 77 d100 trucks.. have a 76 like this in my yard...

I've got a '77 W200 Crew. It has the in-cab tank and NO external tank. It came this way from the factory. Frame tank required different cross-members, so if the truck came with one, I would see signs of the original cross-members being removed, frame re-riveted, etc. Bottom line, this truck left the factory with an in-cab tank and no other tanks...
