Need help with 09 hemi miss - 03/30/14 05:12 PM

Light comes on and it scans cyl 7 misfire p0307.We have changed plugs moved coil pack from one cyl to another. We moved injector from 7 to another cyl. Yesterday we changed valve springs. When you get after it the light comes on, then sometimes it will miss at idle and sometimes not. It does have the tick. Not sure what direction to go now.

Just guessing re- diagnostics- maybe a compression test or cooling system pressure test for a bad head gasket.
How about an injector noid light to see if wire to the injector is bad?

We had 120 lbs of air pressure to the cyl and had no leaks anywhere. we did have a stethoscope on the injectors and they were all clicking. The light only turns on if you get on it hard.

I had one 5.7 in a Durango that had a very slight coolant leak into the cylinder. This engine had been apart previously at another dealership and it looked like they drug the head across the floor scarring the deck surface. You didn't mention it being apart previously but it could be something similar. Get a combustion gas detector kit that is used to detect combustion gasses in the cooling system.

As far as we know nothing major has been done to this engine.

Long shot but check the under hood fuse/relay block. They are open to the elements and corrosion is a problem.

09 is a VVT MDS motor correct? Upper rpm miss makes me think something with the timing/ valvetrain/ cam phasing.

Another thing could be the intake runner change from short to long or vice versa. I wonder if soot in the intake will cause a sticky spot? Lean or rich condition maybe.

I know nothing about the VVT system just spit-balling here.

Thanks for the advice. Drove to Sioux falls last weekend and worked on it. Drove 350 miles home Sunday and that is all I could think about. Well this weekend son is bringing it to Rapid City and taking my car home.

I'm leaning toward a VVT issue as well. I'm told that the cam timing is advanced at low rpms and retards as rpms increase. A rapid acceleration may result in a "lag" in the cam timing, resulting in an erratic signal from the cam positioning sensor. Why only cyl # 7 is affected, i'm not sure.

I would think this is not the case as it only is affecting one cylinder. If it was something like the VVT it would affect other cylinders as well.

Now having said that this engine is an MDS engine correct? I don't know what cylinders the MDS kills but there are four separate solenoids in the valley that control it, there could be a solenoid or harness problem if #7 is indeed one of the cylinders it kills.

Now that makes sense. I have been thinking it almost has to be electrical problem. I will figure out how to test those solinoids.

I'm thinking a solenoid might be weak and under higher pressure it's leaking down.

Okay lifter wore the cam out. I still can't believe i didn't know what was going on. anyone know if dodge will pay something on this.

The lifter wore the cam out? Did the roller on the lifter seize? I've never heard of that one before. Sounds like a good excuse to put a cam out of a 6.4 SRT in

the lifter turned sideways and wore the cam out.

How did that happen? Either way unless you are the original owner and it's still under a powertrain warranty I doubt Chrysler will help but you would have to run it by the service manager at your dealer and see if the district rep may help.

Let me caution you though that if you are not a good customer at that dealership they may not be inclined to do anything. But keep in mind the magic word, please. It can't hurt to ask. Good luck.
