I may be jumping the gun with this thread, but I want to. After I am finished with Tom's Willys Wagon, I have decided to build myself a new trail rig. I fell in love with Sebastian's Willys MB a few years ago and have decided to replicate it with a few minor changes. The main changes are; I will build mine as a tube chassis skinned to look like his and I will have a driver's drop front Dana 44 and an NP231 instead of a pass drop and D300.

I will have the same wheelbase, axle width, wheel/tire, and similar drivetrain. Due to under hood room and cost, I will not have a Mopar engine

And this all started because I had a steering box and a fuel tank laying around

I just got my first piece of sheet metal in yesterday. A top cowl from Walks4x4. The rest of the body panels will be coming from Vintagejeeps.com

I will have a shackle reversal in the front using the new TMR modular spring hanger and sleeve the frame for a shackle bushing.

In the rear I will use another spring hanger in the front eye and Tmr's modular shackle hanger with 3" shackles under the rear bumper.

The LM7 I picked up for $500. I was able to pick it up cheap since everyone wants an LS1 or a 6.0L for their projects and no one wants the 5.3L. 275hp is more than enough power for small Willys.

I also have a Th350 sitting in my garage, but it won't be anything to look at until it gets the Novak adapter

Serious question. What is keeping a 5.7 Hemi from fitting? I'm not real familiar with the dimensions on the MB/2a Jeeps. I'm considering a project just like this. My cousins and their dad have scratch built Jeeps for over 40 years. The templates that 4WD Hardware first used were built by their dad.

Looks awesome! Can't wait for more

The 5.7 Hemi is a little taller and wider, but I am sure it could be squeezed in. The owner of EFISource.com kept trying to talk me into that route. But the initial cost of the motors is what depicted the choice.

The LS motors are even a little tight with a firewall mounted master cylinder.

The Jeep in the first post looks great. I've never heard of anyone building one of these Jeeps in this manner though. Why build one of these from scratch?

both the first picture and the engine bay picture are of Sebastian Varas's old Willys MB (he sold it and built a new one with link suspension and a repro tub). I love how his MB came out, but I intend to improve on his original design to make the Willys able to handle more abuse on the rocker panels. Instead of just 1/8" rock sliders like he had, I will have 1.75" square tube hidden behind the rocker panels tying all the way to the frame rails and the cage tied into the rock sliders. The body panels will be permanently attached and tinned inside. It will be more of a unibody than true buggy. Both of Sebastian's Willys have stock bodies with cages.

Things have changed a little. There is no body panel supplier that has every piece I need. Each has some, but not one has all. I would have to buy from 3 different people and pay freight from each. So I am going to just buy a body kit from one person. If I were to buy all the loose panels with shipping it would cost as much as a whole body. The MB will still be scratch built, but not a buggy, just a Jeep with a cage

The steel for the frame is going to be ordered today as well as more roll cage tubing for Tastykake.

No, the Astro master cylinders are angled weird, short, and square. This is out of a 2003 G3500 Van, but is the exact same as a Silverado 3500 pickup of the same year.

My transfer case is on its way to me

I ordered an Atlas II transfer case with 3.0:1 low, synchronized shifting, 32 spline 1310 CV yoke f/r, super short tail housing, 27spline input and adapter for my TH350.

I spent the morning helping Tom fix his rusty CJ7, then this afternoon I started on my MB. I cut the body mounts but still have to drill the holes, I finished trimming the back of the tub, and I cut rear frame reinforcements. I also order some feet for the roll cage.

I didn't get any work done last week, went up to Mass and Vermont to go wheeling with my Jeep club. Yesterday I made some progress on my MB. I finished the body mounts and rear supports for the centered d-ring mount.

I also added a rear floor support for the centered rear body mount and it will be tied into the cage. All but two of the body mounts will be tied into the cage. There isn't a lot of room to run "frame tie-ins" so I decided to have the body mounts play double duty. Each has a 1/2" bolt, six total.

I'll be notching the wheel wells to move the seat back about 4". The back of the seat will be about where the hoop is. MB's are tiny

Since the -6AN fittings and caps came in, I was able to isolate the hydroboost from the pump and mount it.

and these are the feet of the tire carrier supports, these will attach to the rear bumper. The whole tire carrier will be removable.

The tank is suppose to have a baffle, I never checked. Most are two seperate tanks welded atop each other, but the one is not.

My wiring harness showed up today. I got an EZ Wiring 12 circuit mini fuse harness. I used an EZ Wiring 12 circuit ATO fuse harness in my M715 and liked it a lot.

So... My reproduction headlight buckets showed up. I open them and wow, they come with H4 conversion lights installed. I just got my Hella H4 conversion kit the other week. The description of the buckets only said bucket and retaining ring. Even the picture only showed an empty bucket... I was both impressed and disappointed about this. Now I have extra bulbs for the Challenger...

I removed the heater hose tubes from the new water pump and tapped the holes for 1/2" and 3/8" NPT. The 3/8" is going to get a plug and the front 1/2" will get a fitting that will attach to the steam ports with a hose.

Rear axle tubes are welded and gears/locker are started. 4.56 spicer gears and a detroit locker.

Almost finished with the frame. Just a few things left. I have to finish the notch in the front. I welded the threaded bungs for the skid plate, rear bump stops, and hose clamps.

Tom finished setting up my gears in the rear axle for me. My disc brake brackets for the rear and my Longfield nylon spindle bushing/thrust washer combo showed up.

If you wanted to shorten the hose up, you could go into the upper part of the housing above the hose perhaps? That is what I did on mine..Been this way for a while now and no issues.

Front axle shafts are assembled. My LC2 wide band 02 arrived along with my rear axle bearings, fan relay and breaker, and daystar grommets.

I also tapped the vent hole for a 1/8" NPT fitting and started mounting the shifter assembly. With the Lokar shifter and the short Advance Adapters Th350 to Atlas adapter, I had to use longer bolts and mount the rear support in front of the flange instead of behind.

The lower hose looked like it was going to be my biggest problem, but I found that a lower radiator hose for a 1975 AMC Matador fits with the elbow trimmed off one of the ends.

Man, that thing looks great. When you get a chance, post a video of it running!

That reminds me of the time when I had to hunt for radiator hoses for my Jeep. I formed coat hanger wire into the shapes and lengths I needed, and then spent over an hour staring at hundreds of radiator hoses hanging from the ceiling in the back room of an O'Reilly's Auto Parts store. I found a lower rad hose for a 4 cyl. Jeep Wrangler, and an upper hose for a 318 Duster. Both were perfect fits.

I had bad injectors and fuel rail. After going through three defective ACDelco fuel rails, I finally ordered a BBK Billet fuel rail kit. Now it runs.

I took my MB out on its maiden voyage. Everything works great. I trailered out just in case, but Tom broke his Wagon on the trail. I ended up pulling him out of the trail and he had to use the trailer, so I drove home in the cold with no top, doors, or heater...

I took my MB out on a trail ride last Saturday... I was jumping obstacles and land my rear yoke right onto a rock... oops... I got the parts in to fix it, so tomorrow it is getting back into shape
