non stock mirror options mid 80s truck - 02/15/14 06:12 AM

Looking for suggestions for mirrors for my 83 swb truck.
I want something no bigger than the standard small factory mirrors. Aftermarket or brand x, pics would be great.
I might end up going with peep style street rod mirrors mounted on top of doors. But they need to be about 4" if I do.

i like the round mirrors off a 70,s c body car because they dont look crooked mounted at any angle----if you use a square mirror you have to be very careful of how they are attached----i imagine you want the small mirror for the sleek design and not for checking out the gooseneck trailer you are towing....bob

Bill, bend you some arms & put 40's-60's style stock round mirrors hanging from just down the corner of the door around the vent glass

Your truck is worthy of another custom built part & you know that you're dying to do it.

!/2" square or round stock (I bet you know where some is)& 2 stock type round or rectangle mirrors

I liked these when they were on there. But I found a set of factory mirrors and pulled these off.

They were pep boys specials circa 1995 haha. I'm sure they're still available in some form nowadays.

For sure go with the street-rod style mirrors. They about the only thing that looks half-decent on a First-Gen. Along with that, the C-body rounds are a great suggestion too.

I have a "Universal" mirror like Magnum440d100 and they are still sitting in the plastic package hanging on the garage wall because they just looked wrong from every angle on my '86.

I managed to find one LRE style mirror and, even they don't look that great on these trucks.

Starting to get a sizable collection of the "4-posters" piling up in the far corner of the yard. What were they thinking when they put those on? They STILL wobble no matter how many supports Dodge put on them!

I went with the peep mirrors but instead of mounting them on the top of the door I put them where you see in the picture. It works ok for a small mirror and I can see out of both sides.

Thanks for all the suggestions!
I have decided to go with a pair of these, since I have em, and they are flat black, like the truck. They are pretty tough units, the ones on the bike have lasted over 35000 miles. Been hit by plenty of rocks and bugs. I am not going to use the bar mount part, just bolt em to the top of the door above the vent wing.
I bought 2 pairs when I bought these.

I think it was Mopar Muscle that did a square Dodge, and came up with late '80s Mustang convertible mirrors that worked ...

never tried it, so not sure. Giving it some thought tho, lil red style mirrors are waaay over priced. And I plain hate the three legged abominations on it now.

Does this count as an obligatory Mustang mention? Or is that only in general?

Man, I've had a few ramchargers and rams over the years. Don't have one now but still have a pair of factory 3 leggers on the shelf, just in case....I like em'.

my 84 project had the 3 legged mirrors aswell, but that's gonna change, ive never liked them either I always called them camper specials also like they don't fit the look of the square body dodges. so im using 89 doors with the 88-93 style mirrors.

I went with the peep mirrors also, got mine hanging above the vent window, I can see just enuff of what I want to see with them. sleek and look like a hotrod should. IMHO.

speedway has them 15 bux a piece and you can get a longer arm for them too.

I went with the billet flame shaped rear view mirror for the center of windshield for 30 bux.

I chose the bike mirrors because they are inexpensive, and look good too. Available on ebag for about 20 bucks a pair.
I am experimenting with building my own peep mirrors.......you can get freeze plugs in amazingly large sizes.......

Did some ebay poking around and found the Mustang ones, surely repros, around $150 -up, I think they are electric.

Also found some aftermarket, ones for early Mitsubishi, D50, etc and others, looked like they might work on the sort of vertical area we have, manual, and cheaper, but shipping makes them sort of spendy for experimenting, so I am going to shop at the u pull ...

In our local salvage yards , stuff gets picked over faily quick on trucks. I just am after something not ordinary, cool, maybe home built. Played with positions for the bike mirrors. Also worked on my homebuilts. I will make up my mind and post pics soon.
